Looking for a good and reliable free email service provider? Well, there are a lot of free email service provider out there but a lot are not reliable. And even if they are working well now, there is no way to say they will be stable in the future either. And a lot of them don’t have the necessary protection against threats like spam and viruses. Worse, there are a lot of free email hosts which uses old technology and failed to upgrade their infrastructure, resulting in breaches in their security and your emails could be compromised! So I have decided to check out some of these email hosts and see what is their performance and whether they have adequate protection against viruses and spam .
Please note that such things take time, I have complied a little list of email hosts which I am testing out. All these support POP and SMTP services as well as anti-spam and anti-virus features. And all these hosts are not famous ones like Gmail or Yahoo.
1. Bluebottle - I was unable to get an account yet due to the fact that they limit the number of sign-ups per day, which is actually a good thing. And they sign up procedure is slightly more detailed, which again is another good thing. And access to their website is free (even all the way from Singapore) which is also another good thing. They support POP and SMTP, and claims to have a very strong anti-virus and anti-spam system in place. Their free account gives you a reasonable 250MB of storage and 10MB size file attachment limit. This service looks good. And if you are looking for something more powerful, they have 2 more paid services which allows bigger file attachments, better security and IMAP access.
2. LavaBit - This is yet another impressive free email service provider. You just need to check out the features they have and you will be impressed like me. They provide an storage size of 1GB (if you take their advertisement sponsored personal account - there will be an little advertisement at the bottom of every email you receive) as well as an attachment size limit of 64MB. They also include anti-virus and anti-spam(RBL) features and several email authentication like SPF and DomainKeys Support to help combat spammers. They do not have a webmail interface and they do limit the number of emails sent and received too. But unless you are an email junkie, the amount they provide should be sufficient for most users. And speed wise, it seems fast enough for me. You can also sign up for their enhanced and premium email accounts for a reasonable price (US$8/year). This is a service we can all look at. It’s just too bad about that irritating advert at the bottom, but I guess you can just sign up for their basic account. I am currently testing this service out. Stick around for more detailed reviews.
If you know of any good and free email hosts which provides POP and SMTP access, please let us know! If you are a provider of such a service, we would like to hear more from you as well.
