Not sure whether most of you agree with me, but for me, I think that Notepad is still the best little software out there. It is convenient, easy to use and well, you can do a lot of things with it. For example, you want to write a little text file to tell someone something, you simple start the notepad and then save it. It becomes a text file which anyone on any computer system can view. No need to worry about your recipient using Windows or Mac or Linux or whatever. It is universal! And how about coding HTML? Yes, you can do it too. Notepad allows you easily code HTML, CSS, PHP among other things. Of course there are many other software which can do it better and easier but we might need to purchase or install it. Notepad comes installed by default in Windows. In fact, when I first started HTML Coding (years and years ago), I use notepad for the job. Yes, coding was much less complicated (but more tedious) then. It is so damn handy and useful. That is why it is available in all versions of Windows. It does not come with any bells of whistle so it is very lean. Useful for viewing any text file in a jeffy too. If you would like to see what is inside a file, you ca use notepad as well. Simply start the Notepad program and open the file, remembering to change the file type to “all”. Anyway, do you have a text editor which you like very much and would like to recommend to the readers? If so, please leave a comment. Bookmark It Hide Sites

I am betting that you guys have never heard before of this fine piece of software. It is a software which helps to defrag your HDD. We all know the importance of regularly defraging your HDD as you install software or even just by browsing the Internet, files get fragmentated. When you browse the Internet, temporary files are being downloaded to your cache folder. It also helps you to speed up surfing speeds because some of the files are already on your HDD. So as files are being written to your HDD, they are writen in such a way where the write speeds are fastest. However, this does not mean that read or access speeds will be optimal. In fact, most of the time, the read speeds from your HDD will not be optimal at all. Thus when you access the files on your HDD, it will be slow. So you will need some software which can help you to “defrag” your HDD to help speed up the access speeds to your files. We know that Microsoft has it’s own HDD de-fragmentation software. It is brilliantly called Microsoft Disk Defragmenter and it based on Diskeeper’s own defrag software. However, it is rather limited in it’s capabilities. I have tried a few other good defragment software and most of them are good in one way or another. Of course, I still hadn’t found a defragment software which has all the features which I need. But I have found one which has a few features which are worth mentioning. The software is called Defraggler and is developed by the same group that created CCleaner (Crap Cleaner, lol). Unlike most defragmentation software, this is a file defrag. Which means that it is able to defrag just a file instead of the entire HDD. So if you know which files you often access, you can defrag just those files instead of the entire HDD, this alone can save you several hours. Especially now with huge HDD, most of which are 300GB or above, this can really be a time saver. Imagine Vista alone which can take up several Gigabytes of HDD space, this would definitely be great. Performance wise, it is okay. I don’t think it is one of the fastest defragmenter out there, but well, it more than makes up for it by being able to defrag a certain file alone. Oh, by the way this is a freeware. So you can use it, even if you are using it on coporate computer. Cool. Too bad it isn’t open source. And it is very small in size plus it is portable. So you can bring it anywhere and use it without installation. Defraggler supports all OSes since Windows 2000. So if you are using WinXP or MS Vista, no worries, it will work.
Heard of it? No? Well, neither did I. Today when I started my Internet Explorer 7 and went to Google’s Search Engine to search for some “research material” and there it was. Google Chrome – the latest browser from Google. And because I cannot help myself, I decided to have to try at the new browser. I mean, it is from Google for god’s sake. It should at least be usable. For those who would like to have a go at the browser, please go to Google Chrome Site. I am not too sure the exact size of the download but it should be relatively small as compared to Internet Explorer. Perhaps about the same size as the minimal Firefox browser. Anyway, it downloaded fast on my Internet connection, so I guess most of you guys should be okay. Installation was fine, no problems encountered. And I started my first look at the new browser. What caught my eye was that it is very minimalistic. If you look at Internet Explorer or Firefox, you will be greeted at the tgop with several menu bars which takes up real estate on your browser. This leaves you with less space for the actually browser. But not Chrome. If you have a small screen, then you will really love Chrome. It comes with just a tab and a address bar/navigation for you to key in the URL. Simple. If you are using a slower system, you will also appreciate the fast loading, startup and rendering of Chrome. Feels a lot like Opera when you doing your surfing. Actually not bad. I always enjoyed a fast browser. Well, I will update you guys on this after I played with it for a while. This is just a quick preview. So after, I didn’t encounter any problems with any site. Rendering webpages seems fine (and fast) for most part. However, one wonders why it is called Chrome when there is no chrome? But I think this question is best left to the wise men to figure it out. Bookmark It Hide Sites

Have you guys tried burning a CD image to a DVD? No, I am not talking about converting a VideoCD format to a DVDVideo format. I know a lot of people are interested in that. If you are going to convert the mpeg files from the VideoCD to a MPEG4 format (that’s for DVD Video), you will need a video converter and this method is different from what I am about to introduce to you. Although I know that it is not useful to the majority of the people out there, but at times you may find it useful. For example, just last week, one of my friend’s notebook had a faulty DVDRW drive and his system OS was corrupted. It was able to read DVDs but not CDs. So I had no choice but to create an image from the WinXP CD and then burn the image to DVD in order to reinstall his WinXP. To install WinXP, you will need to make it bootable. If you just copy the contents from the WinXP CD and then burn the data to the DVD, you won’t be able to boot from that DVD anymore. So, data copy is out. The only choose (less replacing the drive) is to make a WinXP Bootable in DVD. Ha, you will be surprised that one day you are looking for this exact solution! The first thing you need is something to image the CD into an iso file. I would recommend you LC ISO Creator. It’s free and extremely user friendly, plus it takes up a few kilobytes of hdd space, which means it takes all but a few seconds to download using your high speed broadband Internet connection. You just need to run the program and choose which drive to image and the image will be saved for you. I never seen anything easier. The next software you need is Deepburner to burn your image. Other mainstream CD/DVD burning software like Nero will not allow you burn a CD image to a DVD. But Deepbuner allows you to do that without any problems. And for my case, after burning, the DVD boots fine and installs without any problems as well. Do not worry, Deepburner has a free version which comes with plenty of features for everyday use. They have a Pro version with some additional features and if you think that they might be useful, then by all means, purchase the software. It is low on resources unlike what I am currently using – Nero. Thank god for alternative software. So next time if you need to burn an CD image to DVD, try this method. It works perfectly for me. Bookmark It Hide Sites

Found a pretty nifty software for you to backup your drivers. It’s called Double Driver. Weird name, but hey, who cares. As long as it works, I won’t give a hoot’s ass if it is called Double Anal. The funny thing is that the developer of the software is called BooZet. Hmmm……This freeware allows you to check your system’s drivers and choose which drivers you want to backup. Just in case when you need to reformat your PC due to some problems, you can make use of those backup drivers instead of searching through the Internet. I know, I work as an IT support and if you have a lot of PCs to install with all sorts of different configurations, it’s going to be very tedious for you to search for all those drivers. Yes, imagine able to get the drivers with just a few clicks. Of course, this requires you to backup prior to formatting your HDD. It is just sad to see that Microsoft’s database of drivers is seriously lacking but it is understandable, seeing that there are a whole lot of hardware for the Windows OS platform compared to other Operating System. Double Driver comes with a small package (about 1.4MB). All you have to do is to download it, install the software and then let it scan for the drivers. You can then choose which drivers you want to backup. Easy Peasy. I would recommend you to backup the drivers on a seperate drive. I mean if you format your HDD, then backup drivers will also be formatted and you are back to square one. I would also recommend you to clone your HDD after you have formatted your PC and installed all the necessary software and programs. Cloning is much faster than formatting and installing (both software and drivers). And nowdays there are a lot of free software which you can use to duplicate your HDD which requires just a few clicks of the mouse. Again, easy peasy. Bookmark It Hide Sites

Well, we are at it again. This time it is extensions for Firefox 3! You should take a look at this post from Mashable – 30+ Must-Have Extensions For Firefox. I didn’t know that there are so many add-ons for Firefox. And I am pretty sure that as the latest version of the browser has just been released, more extensions will start to work for Firefox 3! If you don’t know what are add-ons, they are actually some little software which adds functionality to the open source browser. For example, you can add mouse gestures to your browser just like Opera. Of course, by default the Firefox browser doesn’t allow you to do that. I currently only have the Stumbleupon toolbar installed which I often use to stumble websites. You know, sort of like what we do on TV when we channel surf, you can channel surf websites with this toolbar and tell others which you like and which you don’t like. Anyways, you should go to that site and take a look at the various number of extensions available for Firefox. You will be surprised to see what you can find there which will make your browsing experience a more enjoyable one. I found that Colourful Tabs for Firefox is very cool. It sorts of gives you different colours for each tabs so it won’t get too dull when you are using tabs. Firegestures which I have mentioned easier can also make it more convenient when you browse. Just like what you find in Opera, you can “map” various commands to your mouse gestures (you know, right click + move mouse left and so on). If you are a programmer or a website designer, there are also extensions made especially for you as well. I kind of like software which allows others to help add more features into it. I think that the developers of the actual software should stick to the basics and concentrate on the core produce, while others with different skillset and experience can then work on the other features. This way, we get the best of both worlds with less compromise on quality and worry less about bloated software and bugs. Well, that’s my opinion and it looks like a lot of developers are starting to realize this. Thus, we see starting to see increasing number of programs which allow add-ons.
Wow, barely over a week since it was officially launched and we are already seeing online guides on how to improve the usage of firefox 3 already. Must be a very popular software for it to garter so much support from netizens. I guess because not everyone likes using Microsoft’s IE7 (the most widely used browser) and due to the fact that it is actually challenging the big corporation, netizens will of course be very supportive of the browser. I have only started really using this browser a few days ago, although I did download it during launch day. Anyways, I am always eager to try out new software and see what new features they have. In my opinion, I feel that the developers have done a good job on the browser. It feels much refined than before. The best part is that I no longer have the memory leak problem which plagued the previous versions. I often have the Firefox browser running in the background for hours, so this memory leak problem is causing me a lot of headaches. However, with that solved (I hope), I will look forward to using it more. Furthermore rendering speeds has improved quite significantly which makes this browser a joy to use. There are of course a lot of other new features for this browser like the new address bar drop down (or called Smart Location Bar) and better phlishing protection. Anyways, if you are looking for some tips and tricks to improve your experience with our new Firefox 3, then please take a look here. Bookmark It Hide Sites

Lifehacker has an interesting post on ways for you to recover your deleted files from Windows. I think you guys will find it very useful. Link to the post here. Well, for me, I too often use PC Inspector File Recovery software. Yes, it’s a freeware. I think it’s a quite capable software, considering that it is free and the user interface is very friendly. After using it a few times (keep your finger cross you don’t), you will be able to use it without any problems. Another good looking software is this Recuva which the article has a link to. This software looks a bit barebone but seriously, most people using this software just wants to recover their files and not to tinkle with the software or tweak this or that. In fact, most people using this kind of software are the desperate ones. For me, I am using this to recover my company’s files which had been accidentially deleted off by our company staff. However, the truth is, more often than not, people who accidentially delete off their files don’t know it till much later. Or they didn’t bother until they need the file again. So, by the time I go and attempt to recover the files, it might be too late. The longer you wait, the less chance of recovery as deleted files get overwritten over time. Once overwritten, there is very little chance of recovery. I had always told the company staff to inform me as soon as possible and to stop using the computer if they discovered that they have accidentially deleted off some important files. Apparently, it doesn’t sink it that deleted files are actually on their PC, just marked as empty and ready for some other files to be written over them. And then everyone looks at me like I am a kind of moron. Bookmark It Hide Sites

Yes, it has been released. This is definitely a very good thing for all of us AVG users. I am very eager to check out what new features AVG has implemented on their new version. It is just too bad that the AVG Free download takes a while and it is indeed a very big file to download, approximately 45MB. But I guess nowadays everyone has broadband and this will not be a problem. After you download the latest version, all you have to do is to run the installer. There is no need to uninstall the old version first, just run the installer and let it do all the work for you. Once that is done, you will need to restart your PC and you will see your spanking new antivirus software running happily (we all hope). Anyway, it went great for me without any problems. And after you finish updating the antivirus definitions, you are well-protected from both viruses and spywares. Yes, we do hate those stuff very much, don’t we? The first change you will realize for this software is that it has a very “aero” look and feel to it. It seems that a lot of software comes with this kind of look nowadays. Well, pretty sure that AVG don’t want to be left out. The interface feels the same as the previous version, which is good for people like me. We just don’t like too much changes. The main user interface is simple, it has all you need to configure your antivirus software there. Basically, you just need the “update now” button. That’s the one I always use. However, I also realized that the user interface seemed to be more sluggish than before. Not sure whether it is because my PC is getting too slow for new software, but it took a few moments for the interface to pop up. There is one very interesting new feature which I would like to comment on. It is called Safe Search. Basically it is like a anti-phishing script which helps to check whether a link is pointing to a potentially dangerous site or not. However, this is only for search results on search engines like Google. Take a look at the ticks they show. Well, I agree with AVG. They are very suitable and those big green ticks gives me all the confidence I need to visit these sites without fear of being flooded with spywares and other evils!
Take a look here. That’s 10 free CD/DVD burning software for you to try out! Sure, all of us have used Nero before and found that it works well. And we get so used to using Nero that we don’t really want to try out other software. Well, I think we should. Nero is a paid software and the next DVD burner your purchase may not come with Nero. This will certainly cause a lot of problems if you aren’t used to the new interface. Plus, Nero is very much a bloatware. It takes up a lot of space and have tons of useless features and may be sluggish on low end PCs. I am sure that those 10 free CD/DVD burning software would not be as resource hungry as Nero. I always like lean software which doesn’t tax the resources too much. Basically, what a CD/DVD burning software should have is data burning, CD/DVD duplication, audio CD/DVD creation and video (VCD/DVD Video) conversion. The others are just extras to most people and most people seldom use them at all. In fact, most people use their burners to make backups of your CDs/DVDs. My favourite is InfraRecorder, as it is completely open source and has a good number of features to boot. However, I found that it has some problems with certain drives, especially when doing DVD burning. But with the latest version, I think quite a lot of bugs have been patched and it should be quite stable. From what I know, it doesn’t support Blu-Ray or HD DVD either. Too bad. However, from the list, there are a few free software which can support Blu-Ray and HD DVD like StarBurn & BurnAware. Now, that’s impressive for free software. We usually think of such free software as perhaps something with less features than a commercial one, but that’s not always true. Sometimes, free software can even have more features than their commercial counterparts. I think I will be doing some testing on these software in the near future. They do look very good as alternatives to Nero. Not to say that Nero is a bad software, but it is always good to have alternatives and I am a sucker for testing out new software. I like to try new things! Especially those that are free. If you know any other free CD/DVD burning software, please give me a hoot and I will put them down on my list to test out.
