Lol, it is inevitable that I will come and review this. I mean, which self-respecting “health” guy doesn’t? Museli bars are all the rage in Singapore. Everyone is buying them by the packs like nobody’s business. It is ironic that the same group of people buying these Museli bars also went and purchase boxes of chocolates, ice cream and other unhealthy snacks. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way. First of all, I have nothing against eating chocolate, sweets or ice cream. However, you have to do that in moderation. Eating tons of sweets and chocolate and thinking that consuming some museli bars on the way is not healthy. It is like eating fatty foods and then believing that eating a piece of lettuce will remove all the fats from your body. If you want those extra calories to go away, you will need to burn them off and the best way to do that is to exercise. You won’t get it by eating some cabbage.
Anyway, this is something which I would consider a guilt reprieve. Just like those ladies drinking “slim” or “no-fat” milk and believing that they will become slim in no time, which is kind of sad. We have this mistaken notion that flashy labels on foodstuff means exactly what they say. Ladies, low fat milk does not make you slim, and most of the nutrients in the milk which makes milk a healthy foodstuff is in the milk fat!

Photo of the Alpen Raspberry & Yogurt. Looks very tempting, doesn’t it? Check out the nice fresh looking raspberries and the healthy looking golden wheat!

Even Tastier! Now with 30% more fruit! Cool!

Okay, this is a mixed cereal bar with apple and raspberry, dipped and drizzled with a yogurt flavour coating. What does it mean when they say “yogurt flavour coating”? Why not just state that it is yogurt? Probably means that there is significantly less “yogurt” in the white coloured coating then what you expect. Yes, the rest of the ingredients for the coating should be sugar or some sweetener. The net weight for each bar is 29g. Yes, very little.

Oh, store your bars in a cool dry and odourless place. Err…like your handbag.

Hehehehe, these delicious, moist and chewy Alpen bars provide a tasty snack at any time of the day. With six tempting flavours to choose from, you are spolit for choice. Yes indeed. Just go to any of our local supermarkets and you will be greeted with a wide range of such cereal/museli bars to choice from. Sometimes, I just get so confused that I never bother to even read the labels.
And check out the big green tick at the bottom! It must mean something good.

Here we have the nutrition table.

Here we have the ingredients list. Cereals (33% - Rice, Whole Oats, Whole Wheat), Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Fruit Juice Concentrates (Grape, Raspberry (0.8%)), Dried Apple pieces (4.5%), Humectant - Glycerol, Milk Lactose, Milk Yogurt Powder (2.5%), Dextrose, Wheat Gluten, Freeze Dried Raspberry (0.8%), Skimmed Milk Powder, Maize Starch, Malted Barley Extract, Milk Whey Powder, Emulsifier: Soya Lechithin, Defatted Wheat Germ, Flavourings, Salt, Acidity Regulator: Malic Acid, Antioxidant: Topcopherols. Confusing? Hell yes. Good? Maybe not. Too much skim milk and defatted stuff. In other words, too many processed ingredients.
Oh, before I forgot, this product contains wheat, barley, oats, milk, soya and sulphites and may contain traces of nuts. So if you are allergic to these kind of food, stay away!

Okay, now we have one bar of this Alpen Raspberry and Yogurt cereal bar. Again, it looks heavenly.

Once you open the shiny pack, you will find the cereal bar, all ready for you to consume. I find it a bit sweet tasting to me. In fact, all the Alpen cereal bars seemed a little too sweet. But overall, I do find it pretty delicious.
Saw this at Shop N Save the other day and I couldn’t resist. No, I am not really into Gummy Bears but the packaging is so very tempting. I had thought that it was from some upmarket brand like Marks & Spencer but alas, it is not too be. It is from First Choice, yes, the “housebrand” of Shop N Save and Cold Storage. And no, they are not cheap stuff. In fact, a lot of “housebrands” are in the middle price range, contradictory to what our government have been telling us. And this First Choice Gummy Bears is no exception. For just one small pack of Gummy Bears, it cost 75 cents. The weight? 50g! What to do, everything now is so damn expensive, even cheaply produced sugars with some flavours added to it will cost 75 cents per 50g. Of course, if they didn’t have such nice packaging (like those ugly-ass sweet packaging offered by “The Natural Confectionary”), I probably would not have bought it.

There, the photo of the small pack of gummy bears I purchased. Read carefully, it says “European Quality”.

See, it states European Quality. Does that mean that it is good quality or poor quality? I have no idea.

Okay now, the ingredients list includes Glucose syrup, sugar, gelatine, water, grape juice from concentrate, acidity regulator, humectant, artificial fruit flavours like lemon, orange, strawberry, blackcurrant, apple and pineapple, glazing agent, vegetable oil and food colour. Ya, sorry about the photo, you probably can’t see some words on the right. I had forgotten to move the flap away when I took the photo.

Yes, this gummy bear is not suitable for children under 3 years old, so don’t go feeding your kid with gummy bears. You will need to store the gummy bears in a cool, dry place and keep away from direct sunlight. The best place to store the hummy bears is in your tummy like what I did.

Check it out - product of the Czech Republic. So, this is what they meant by European Quality. I had thought that it was made in France or Germany or Italy or some Western European nation. By honestly, this Gummy bear taste very good. Not too sweet, the texture of the gummy bears is good but the fruit flavours is a bit weak though. Overall, I really like it.
Lol, health food. Yes, these are the foodstuff which a lot of people think of when you say “Health Food” - cereal bars! They usually come packed with all sorts of cereals, rice, wheat flakes, dried fruits and nuts. Kind of disgusting if you ask me but since everyone says that it is healthy for you, I just have to try it. So I went ahead and looked for the most attractive cereal bars I could find and I found it - Alpen Light Cereal Bars. I admit that it is a bit pricy for such a small amount of cereal but it seems to have everything a health freak would want - low in calories and fat, plus guilt-free eating. If it was up to me, I would not have bothered with “Light” and just go with the original “fatter” versions.
You can find this Alpen Light Cereal Bars in NTUC and Shop N Save. However, I don’t seem to be able to find them at Sheng Siong. Probably a bit too high tier for Sheng Siong.

Okay, here we have the 5 bars box. I bought the Summer Fruits flavour. Yes, it is low in Saturated fat and comes with prebiotic to aid healthy digestion. For those who have no idea what prebiotics are, they are actually fibers which are not digested by our bodies but flows to our gut where the bacteria (both good and bad) consumes them. So if you have a unhealthy gut, you probably shouldn’t consume prebiotics. However, if you have a healthy gut, this prebiotic will definitely help maintain a good digestive system.

Woooohooo! Less than 70 calories per bar - a health freak’s wet dream.

Yup, it is a prebiotic mixed cereal bar with apple, sweetened cranberry, raspberry, strawberry and a yogurt drizzle. The total weight for the 5 bars is 105g. Yes, very small bars my friends, very small bars.

The back of the Alpen Light Summer Fruits pack. Not to worry, if you cannot see any details from the above photos, I have small more detailed photos just below.

Well, you will love their “lighter” cereal bars from Alpen. They contain less sugar and half the fat of regular Alpen yogurt bars. With less than 70 calories per bar, they are a great way to keep in shape. And there is no compromise on taste. High fibre wheat flakes and nutritious oats combined with the tasty summer fruits of cranberries, raspberries & strawberries and finished with a delicate drizzle of yogurt. Alpen light bars are a delicious snack you can enjoy any time of day. The truth is, no matter what you add, a cereal bar will always be a cereal bar. Wheat, oats or rice will always taste the same - bland. So it all depends on the mix of fruits and nuts to give the cereal bar the difference in taste.
Anyway, they claim that the big difference is the addition of prebiotic which can boost friendly bacteria to help maintain a healthy digestive system. This I completely disagree. Prebiotics do not differentiate between good bacteria and bad bacteria, so if it is food for the bacteria as claimed by the manufacturer, it will also affect the bad bacteria. So if you have digestive problems, it would not be wise to consume prebiotics.

Ahhhh….the ingredients list - Cereals (42% wheat, oats and rice), prebiotic Oligofructose (30%), Sugar, Fruit Juice Concentrates (apple, strawberry and raspberry) , humectant - glycerol, dried apple pieces, glcuose syrup, vegetable oil, dextrose, sweetened craberries, freezed dried raspberry, wheat gluten, malted barley extract, milk lactose, milk yogurt powder, salt, maize starch, flavourings, skimmed milk powder, milk whey powder, defatted wheat germ, citric acid, emulsifier (Soya Lecithin), acid regulator (Malic acid) and antioxidant (tocopherol). Wow, what an ingredient list! Kind of scary if you think about any the processed stuff in this bar.
Oh, if youhave allergies against wheat, barley, oats, milk, soya, sulphites and nuts, you might want to steer clear of this cereal bar.

The nutritional table. Quite a lot of fibre!

There you have it - one bar of Alpen Light Summer Fruits Cereal Bar. Time to enjoy!

Look at the little yogurt drizzle. This soft, slightly sticky mix of cereal and fruits is actually quite tasty. If you like cereals, this would make a good choice for busy people on the go. Just put a few bars in your handbag and you can munch them on the MRT or buses. Just don’t get caught by the security people.
Yes, I know - it is not healthy foodstuff. In fact, I think it can be considered rather unhealthy, seeing that this is “BBQ coated” peanuts. Not sure what kind of salt and oil is used to make this Koh-Kae Peanuts. But for those who have eaten this before, they will only tell you one thing - it is super delicious! Once is not enough! When I started eating this, I cannot stop. It is so damn delicious. Thank god peanuts themselves can be considered at the very least a healthy snack. If not, I worry for my heart and what will happen if I continue to eat the entire pack in one go. I mean you just cannot help yourself! Oh, by the way, I doubt you can find this in Singapore. My friend bought for me in Malaysia. Don’t be jealous. Lol.
Well, this Koh-Kae Peanuts do not have any trans-fat. Thank the gods for that. I really hate to see myself consuming all those trans-fat.

Unless you have travelled to Malaysia before, you won’t be able to find this brand in Singapore stores. Trust me, I have looked everywhere and they cannot be found! Seems that even Sheng Siong do not bring them into Singapore. Not sure why the manufacturer do not want to bring them into Singapore. Probably they believe that Singaporeans are all very health conscious freaks. But seriously, Singaporeans will love this snack.

Looks like a Japanese guy with glasses carrying a banner. Cute.

Ya, Bar-B-Q flavour coated! I like.

Nice, premium export quality. I am guessing they mean the peanuts are of higher quality. So does that mean that the snacks they make for their own local market is of inferior quality? Aiya, marketing people!

Okay now, the ingredients are peanuts, wheat flour, glutinous rice flour, corn flour, vegetable oil, Bar-B-Q flavour, sugar and salt. Of course, they don’t show what chemicals and/or spices they are using to make that “Bar-B-Q Flavour”, which I believe is artificial in nature.

See, no trans-fat!

Yes, product of Thailand. Looks like even in Malaysia, a lot of their stuff are still made in other countries. It seems that Malaysia too is suffering from the same problems in Singapore - high cost of manpower and production. So a lot of industries are shifting their production lines to other cheaper countries like China, Thailand and Indonesia. Well, welcome to globalization!

Yup, what we have here are those Koh-Kae Bar-B-Q Flavoured coated peanuts. They are salty pieces of flour coated peanuts actually. Not bad if you are looking for a quick and easy to eat snack. However, remember to eat everything in moderation. Consuming too much of this snack will definitely not be good for you.
Don’t you guys agree? Yesterday when I returned home, I went to bath and just after I came out of the bathroom, I started to perspire again. Yes, it was that warm. I can hardly believe it. However, it has been warm for the past few weeks already. Feels like I am perpetually living in an overheated oven. In fact, my office with it’s air conditioning actually looked more tempting than my own room (no air conditioning there). Even in the mornings, I do feel the heat. Normally I would wake up with my hands and feet cold, now I wake up on a pool of sweat on my bed. You can imagine what it is like in the afternoons when we go out for our lunch. The sun is so blazing hot that you can’t even look upwards! It is no wonder that everyone ducks to the nearest shopping mall for some air-condition comfort from the sun.
I really hope that it will get less warm in the coming months. But from experience, June and July are usually the warmest months of the year, especially in Singapore. So if May is already that warm, I would expect much worse in the coming months. Imagine the heat! I really pity those people who have to work in the sun. They spend hours and hours working under the cruel sun and earning very little, yet they have to tahan the heat. Construction work is properly the toughest job of them all. I mean most of us complain about the weather, yet we spend most of our time in our air-conditioned offices. These people have to face the oppressing heat day in and day out. Sometimes we think that our own job is tough, but looking back, there are always some jobs which are much tougher than ours.
Perhaps what they say about global warming is true? If the world is indeed getting warmer due to our actions, I think it is now time for us to act. If not, I think we will all be burnt alive in this man-made oven we call Earth. Well, of course I am saying this because of the heat that is killing me these few weeks. I am sure that if the weather is cool again, I (and many people like me) would have forgotten about trying to protect the environment and continue to do whatever we have been doing without any care to the environment. Sad.
Very cool french name! But the truth is that this is just a glorified cream covered Pocky stick. You remember in the past there was only like a few types of such snacks? Pocky comes in only 3 flavours - plain, strawberry or chocolate. Now they come in different shapes and sizes and they have tons of exotic flavours. Ahhh….how times have changed. Anyway this is just a stick biscuit covered with some mixed berry cream and every one thinks that it is super special. But I like it. Yes, I know that I am suppose to eat healthy but hey, who says you can enjoy yourself once in a while. It is not like I am eating such things every day. And even if I want to, I can’t afford it. With such a name like “Fran Patisserie”, do you expect it to be cheap?
After I did a little research on the Pocky Snacks, which are actually stick biscuits, I realize that such snacks do have a lot of fans. There is even a site which is called “Pocky Shrine”! Just google for “Pocky Shrine” and you will be directed to the site. I am just surprised to see that there are such fateful fans of such an simple snack. Not simple you say? As I mentioned before, basically it is just a stick biscuit covered with flavoured cream. Why such a big hoohaa over this? I really hope that I will not be bombarded with hate email after Pocky fans found out that I made such a remark.

Don’t you just love the Japanese? The design of the Fran Patisserie is simple, yet elegant. I don’t understand why other brands don’t follow suit? Perhaps a lot of snack manufacturers (especially local ones) don’t really want to spend a large sum of money on marketing and designing of their snacks. Perhaps they are more interested in making the “perfect” product for their customers to enjoy? Not likely but one can always hope right?

Ya, Fran Patisserie! Open there.

The back of the Meiji Fran Patisserie pack. All in Japanese. Actually, this can be considered good marketing. All you have to do is write Japanese words on your wrapping or packaging and it will automatically be assumed to be from Japan and highly sought after.

Just check out the ingredients list! It contains wheat flour, sugar, cocoa butter, lactose, vegetable fat, whole milk powder, shortening (cream powder), raspberry powder, cocoa powder, condensed(cndensed??) milk powder, trehalose, cultured milk powder, black raspberry powder, malt extract, cheese powder, skim milk powder, dehydrated strawberry, salt, almond paste, emulsifier (containing soy bean), leavening, acidulant, colouring (Flavonoid), monascus, colour, flavouring, antioxidant (Vitamin E) and Vitamin C. What is the thing with all these powders? Seems to me that they made this product entirely from powders! And remember, too much processed food is bad for you. Looking at the long list of ingredients, I can only say that this is definitely bad for you. But you should indulge yourself once in a while!
This is a product of Japan! Don’t you love Japanese stuff? From the ever increasing number of stores selling Japanese goods, I have to say that most Singaporeans do. And Korean stuff too.

That’s what you get inside. Only 3 small packs of Fran Patisserie.

The Meiji Patisserie pack.

Sorry, I left this in my study room for a bit too long and the weather was very warm, so the cream melted slightly. You can see that a small amount of the cream is stuck to the wrapping. If I have not left it in my study, this picture would definitely look better. I apologize. But if you are looking for a quick snack which is not too sweet but still flavourful, I think that this Meiji Fran Patisserie should be a good choice. My nephew loves to eat off the cream and hand the stick to me to finish up. Lol!
Don’t you just love honey? You guys should know that I do. It is not only delicious but a very healthy alternative to sugar. The major problem with our table sugar (Sucrose) is that it is highly processed and stripped off most (if not all) it’s nutrients. That is why we are getting such nice white looking sugar and why it is the cause of a lot of our health issues. We simply eat too much processed sugar (sucrose) in our diets! In just one candy bar, you could be consuming more sugar (which contributes to weight gain) than let’s say beef! Yes, even the same amount of fatty beef do not do that much harm to your body. However, in our society, unless you are some sort of cook-it-yourself health nut, you will always come across food which sugar had been added. You cannot avoid it. My only suggestion is to consume table sugar or foods containing sugar in moderate amounts. In fact, you should consume all foods in moderate amounts.
Raw Honey, unlike table sugar is not a highly processed foodstuff. Of course, most honey we find in our stores have been filtered, heated, and treated with something somewhere which makes the Honey lose most of it’s important healing properties. That is why I recommend Raw Organic Honey which has not been processed (heated) nor filtered. But they are expensive and sometimes hard to find. The main reason why they are expensive is because it is difficult to remove the honey from the honey combs without heat, so it takes a much longer time for the manufacturer to produce the honey. Time is Money. But the health benefits it confers is tremendous. However, if you cannot find Organic Raw Honey, you should look for those Honey that during the manufacturing process have not been heated over 47°C. Heating over 47°C will kill off the enzymes and some of the nutrients and vitamins and thus lose most of it’s health giving benefits.
Anyway, I purchase this Superbee Pure Australian Honey from NTUC. If I am not wrong, NTUC’s own housebrand Honey is exactly the same, just that they replace the label with their own. I emailed Superbee to ask about the process in making their honey and they told me that the honey has not been heated above 47°C but it has been filtered. They claim that heating the Honey at 47°C will not harm the honey’s nutritional value in any way. Filtering will remove the Pollen, Bee Wax and other “impurities”, making the honey look more appealing to the customers. Again, this is rather sad as those “impurities” are actually good for us.

The Superbee Pure Australian Honey. I bought the 1kg bucket because it was on offer.

Yes, this is a product of Australia, seeing that it is made from Pure Australian Honey.

Ya, a good energy booster right? It is actually good to take a tablespoon of honey in the morning. You will feel more energized. The ingredients as you guys might have already guessed is 100% Pure Australian Honey. Oh, the label also states that honey will crystallize naturally. But can be returned to liquid by placing the jar in warm water. Note that it is warm water, not boiling water. You don’t want to kill off any enzymes in the honey. This is of course with the assumption that there are enzymes there in the first place.
Finally, something new to review on this blog. I bet that you are tired of seeing yogurt, milk and chocolate reviews everyday right? Well, this is a fruit flavoured Vinegar drink. Not sure whether you guys have tasted plain old vinegar before. If you did, you would know that it taste rather awful. I mean it is great on salads and as a dressing, but drinking it straight up, taste more like lighter fluid than anything. You really need to dilute it in order for it to actually drink the damn thing or just add some fruit juice to balance off the tanginess. But drinking unfiltered, unpasteurised fermented vinegar is very healthy. Yes, it does not contains a lot of nutrients or vitamins like what we see in other “superfoods” but it helps in calcium absorption, controlling blood sugar levels, helps digestion as well as fights off infection. Remember, the health benefits comes from unfiltered and unpasteurised vinegar. If you can find them in our local supermarkets, they should look dirty, like some mess of glob is at the bottom. Those are real fermented vinegar.
A few weeks ago, I went to Sheng Shiong and saw them selling this concentrated vinegar/juice mix. This is exactly the same thing as the Grape Vinegar I am reviewing now, all you have to do is to add water to it. Yes, exactly the same as making a drink from those juice cordials. Would be a cheaper alternative (S$7 for about 20 servings?) than buying this packet of Fruit Vinegar - S$1.50 per pack!

Yes, we have the Shih-Chuan Grape Vinegar!

Very nice packaging. Kind of cute. Got Japanese wordings as well. Flocks of Singaporeans are going to buy it. If you want to drink it, simply open the screw top, put the tube into your mouth and well….swallow.

Basically this is just vinegar and grape juice. It is not like those Apple Cider Vinegar or Red Wine Vinegar where the Apple Cider or the Wine has been inoculated with Vinegar bacteria to convert the alcohol in those beverages into Vinegar. So, don’t be confused with the two.

They quench your thirst and their acid content makes them a natural mouth freshener! And of course, they are bad for your teeth. You should drink down acidic stuff fast and not let it mingle in your mouth. Oh, this packet contains only 140ml of fruit vinegar. Yes, hardly enough to fill your cup. Hardly enough for me to enjoy leh. But I admit, it does taste very refreshing.

The ingredients are water, grape juice, fermented vinegar and fructose! See, I did not lie to you. And this drink can last for 2 years without any preservatives. Weird, they say that this contains “non preservatives”. What do they mean by that?
The label also encourages you to drink with chilled water, saying that it is tastier! But won’t that make it too diluted? This is not a concentrate right? Or did I just drink a lot of acid and didn’t feel a single thing in my throat? Have I been drinking Kefir for so long that I no longer find Vinegar that foul tasting anymore? Oh my god!

The nutrition table for this Grape Vinegar. As I mentioned before, Vinegar doesn’t have a lot of nutrients to begin with. Adding a little fruit juice won’t make it significantly better. But its health benefits actually comes from its acid content.
I actually emailed the manufacturer and asked whether they do pasteurised and filter their vinegar but however, they never replied back. Too bad. I guess that is the problem with Asian companies, they don’t really reply to inquiries.
Ya, a dark chocolate review. I am sure that this would be more appealing to you guys. All those reviews on fresh milk, UHT milk and what-not gets so damn boring after a while. Most of you guys would have fallen asleep when you read those blog post and I apologize. But I find it kind of interesting myself. But that is just me. And of course, my interest in makign yogurt and Kefir. The milk that goes into making those foodstuff requires good quality milk in order for the yogurt or the Kefir to come on delicious.
Anyway, enough of milk. It is time to review this Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. Yes, this is dark chocolate. The healthier version of chocolate. If you get rid of some of the milk, you will get dark chocolate. But the taste is very bitter and I am sure that none of us would be able to swallow pure dark chocolate without collapsing from all those bitterness. So, the dark chocolate we find in the supermarkets meant for the general public usually come with a percentage of milk in them. You can check out the amount of cacao in the chocolate from the labels - the more (flavanol antioxidants) the better it is for you. But it is an acquired taste, so you should try chocolate with a lower cacao content first before going for those “extra dark chocolates”. Consumer dark chocolate are supposed to be bitter sweet and feels less creamy than milk chocolate and a whole lot more aromatic. For me, I like those 60% cacao dark chocolate. But they can be rather expensive and hard to find.
I bought this Hershey’s Dark Chocolate from NTUC for about S$1.50. Considering the raising prices of everything, I find this quite reasonable. Hey, it is Hershey’s leh!

Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. Hershey’s is the most popular brand of chocolate in the world, especially in America. In Singapore, it is not that popular but anyone who has watched American shows or movies would have heard of Hershey’s. Yes, they make the chocolate sauce as well.

Hoooooo! Natural source of Flavanol Antioxidants. These stuff are good for fighting off free radicals and may provide cardiovascular benefits. The more cacao content in the chocolate, the more of such Flavanol Antioxidants are in the chocolate. So look for one that has the most cacao content for the most benefits. This Hershey’s Dark Chocolate has about 45% cacao only. But beware, chocolate with a lot of Cacao content can be overwhelming in taste and very bitter, so you should not go beyond something like 60% to 70%.

The back of the chocolate bar. Nothing much here.

Ahh…..we come to the ingredients list - Chocolate (100%) , [Sugar, Cocoa Mass, Cocoa Butter, Cocoa processed with Alkali, milk fat, lactose (milk), emulsifiers (Soya Lecithin) , E322 and Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate, E476] Vanillin, Artificial flavour and milk. And this is made in the USA! Cool. 41g of heavenly dark chocolate all the way from the US for us to enjoy. I love Hershey’s.

I repeat, this is manufactured in the USA by The Hershey Company!

Ya, seems a bit old. But at least it is still before the expiry date.

Lo and behold, the Hershey’s Dark Chocolate bar! 12 chocolate pieces for you to enjoy. I normally consume them without breaking them into pieces. You know lah, I am very greedy and I love dark chocolate. I finished this entire bar in one sitting.

A more detailed picture of the Hershey’s Dark Chocolate. Don’t you find them super tempting? Mouth watering and aromatic chocolate! I just wish that I had purchased more.
Oh no, old man food alert! I bet you are wondering what has gotten into me to be reviewing two old man food products in a roll. Well, I have absolutely no idea. As I said before, I went to Sheng Siong and when I saw the Sichuan Soya Bean Curd, I could not help myself. And for this silken Tofu, well the same thing happened. I just looks so tempting for me to buy. And this is smooth tofu, unlike the soya bean curd which I had never eaten before, it is something which I always enjoyed eating. It is smooth, does not contain any strong flavours, easy to consume, cheap and nutritious. What more can you ask for a food?
The price of this Tofu is about 50 cents. Yes, even the humble Tofu is getting more expensive day by day. I remembered the time when Tofu pieces cost about 10 cents each. But those times have long gone and we are now stuck with overpriced Tofu. If you are thinking of making your own Tofu, you should go do it. From what I read, it is pretty easy. But you do need some specialized equipment and some time. Basically it is just soya bean milk and some coagulant like calcium sulfate is added to mix and you will see curds forming - you get tofu.
For the less adventurous, we shall continue our little review on this Lucky Smooth Tofu!

I am guessing that Taufu Lembut is Malay for smooth tofu? The packaging is pretty normal. In fact, most of the Tofu packaging looks the same. Perhaps they should follow the Japanese and start having better designs for their Tofu? I mean, just look at the dazzling array of Tofu they have in the supermarkets nowadays. Something different to catch the eye of the consumer perhaps?
Oh, the brand is typical of us Chinese. We like the word “Lucky”, so we name everything Lucky. lol!

Ahhh…the ingredients are Soyabean, GDL, Calcium, Antifoam and water. From what I know, GDL is Glucono Delta Lactone which is used to make silken tofu. That means that this smooth tofu is never press and it allowed to set in the container itself. That means that it is cheaper and easier to make, so why it is still so expensive?

Made in Malaysia. Although the weight is 300g, we must note that this is mostly water. In fact, it is just Soya Bean Milk that has been harden/firmed. Oh, this smooth tofu has no preservatives. Good for health conscious folks like me.

What the hell? The serving size is 100g while they have yet another table for 100g consumption? Something is very wrong here. Or is it because it is compulsory to have the 100g table in every nutrition table? I have no idea but I still think it is stupid.
There you have it, the end of the little review. Tofu is good. Go eat some.
