The main reason why I like those Museli bars or cereal bars is because they are just so convenient to consume. They pack so many nutritious stuff into one compact bar and you can eat it on your way to work. I mean, very few other healthy foodstuff can have the distinction of allowing you to do that. Most Singaporeans when they need convenience food, will visit the snack shops. Consuming too much of those fried oily snacks is not good for your health. Just imagine Singaporeans every day having to rush to work and it soon becomes a norm for most. It is no wonder our health is getting worse and people are getting sick more frequently. Not to mention chronic diseases are on the rise. Stress and this kind of lifestyle, I am not surprised. It is about time we start to correct the problem with a proper diet.

The Barres White Chocolate Strawberry Cereal Bars. 6 bars each 21g. Check out those white chocolate and strawberries. They do look delicious don’t they? It seems to me that Barres don’t like the English language and thus they never include English labels on the pack.

The back of the pack.

Apparently there is no English labels on the actual pack so Carrefour Singapore has to do their own. The ingredients for this cereal bar are – oats, flakes, wheat, flour, glucose syrup, nuggets of white chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, lactose, powder of unskimmed milk, milk cream powder, emulsifier:lecithin of soya, aroma), fruity nuggets of strawberry, moistering, glycerol of palm, coconut sweeten, puree of concentrated strawberry, wheat fiber, vegetable fat, rice starch, gel, sorbitol of wheat, sugar, dextrose of wheat, caramel, salt, aroma, emulsifier, sucreosters of fatty acids of bettraves and so on. Wow, what a list. I take it back that this is healthy food, this is NOT! The ingredients list is a dead giveaway. This is simply too highly processed to be anything remotely healthy.

Something about nutrition. Not too sure what they are saying.

Ya, another one. No English wordings. Those French really hate the English and Americans.

One pack of cereal bar.

Yes, looks completely different from the picture on the box eh? This is a bit too dry in my opinion. Can’t really taste the white chocolate and the strawberries. But overall, it taste quite decent. And most importantly, it is not too sweet. Can’t stand those cereal bars that are so cloyingly sweet. But as I mentioned previously, with the huge amount of highly processed ingredients, this cereal bar shouldn’t be a regular fare on your breakfast menu.

My Fridge Died

Nobody appreciates their good old fridge till it goes down. Then all of a sudden, we understand the importance of having a fridge and we start to value it more. Lol, not really, but it can be kind of irritating to have your fridge die on you and with that, all the food that is stored in the fridge. I actually didn’t realize that my fridge had died. It did give some very slight funky smell from all those heated coils behind the fridge and that lasted for a few days. I had thought that it was due to the coils being overheated or something. Then I noticed that the stuff in the freezer was starting to thaw slightly. I knew then that my fridge was gone. The bright side is that it lasted me about 4 years in all. Not bad considering that it cost a measly $400 for such a big fridge. If I remembered correctly, I got the fridge for a discount.

And the sad thing is that all the food that is stored in the fridge was stale as well. Gain City has a waiting list of 2 days for their goods to be delivered, so no choice I had to clear away those perishables from the fridge and when I say perishables, I mean nearly everything. Luckily, most of the stuff in my fridge were those which I had forgotten or had no idea what they were for. So, at least not a big heartache. Actually, it was kind of a blessing in disguise. It gave me a chance and a reason to clear my fridge of all the unwanted stuff. And by the time the new fridge was delivered, I had thrown away almost everything. That includes my butter, some ice cream, yogurt and some of my recent purchases. No biggie but still a waste. You don’t expect me to finish off so much butter, yogurt and ice cream in one sitting right? My family members are not into these stuff either. So I ate what I could and discard the rest. It is actually quite interesting to realize that most people (including me) had tons of unwanted stuff tucked in our fridge. So one day, find some time to clear your fridge. You will be surprised to find that you actually do have a lot of space in your fridge.

Anyway, Gain City delivered the new fridge and all is fine. I didn’t get a fancy high tech fridge, just a pretty normal one. No weird gadgets nor whatever high tech temperature control. Just a plain old fridge. The price is $300 over with a 2 year warranty. Okay lah, stuff nowadays are not meant to last long anyway.

Greenfields Fresh Milk (Again)

Yes, this is my second review of the infamous Greenfields Fresh Milk. I had done a quick review a few months back but now they have came up with a new packaging and as cosmetics is very important in the dairy market, I decided to do another review. And as you guys know, this is Greenfields – the milk company which probably best at marketing. The cows are originally from Australia but they are now in Indonesia and thus the milk should be produced in Indonesia. But then, Indonesian cow’s milk is not popular, not even in Indonesia. So they cleverly added words like “From Australian Cows” and “Under licensed and quality controlled by XXX Australia”. So for those who don’t read labels, a quick glance and they would believe that the milk is from Australia. Well, what can I say? Ethics don’t seem to bother businessmen anymore. Of course, I am not saying that the quality of milk from Greenfields is bad as I have no idea that it is. What I am saying is that they should be more “honest” in their labeling. I especially dislike companies which intentionally try to trick consumers with such labeling.

Woooo! This is the new packaging for Greenfields. Not impressive? Yes, I agree. Nothing special but at least they have a happy smiling family on the cartoon. It always makes consumers feel safe when they see happy smiling kids and parents on the labels. Imagine if one day, your milk cartons come with pictures of men with butcher knives slaughtering cows. Would you buy the milk?

This is 100% fresh milk. Pasteurised and homogenised. This means that the milk has been heated treated and processed so that the milk fat globules are smaller and more evenly distributed. It helps to prevent creaming at the top. We consumers like our milk to look nice and clean, don’t we?

Ahhh….no preservatives added. Thank the gods for that.

Ingredients – Fresh Milk! That is just wonderful. A short ingredients list is always better than a long one. Greenfields pasteurised and homogenised fresh milk gives you superior taste and nutrition of fresh milk from diary cows imported from Australia. But then it is produced by PT Greenfields in Indonesia! Yes, I repeat, this milk is from Indonesia and NOT Australia as you might be led to believe.

Wow, check out the impressive nutritional table. However, just wondering whether all these figures mean that the milk is rich in those vitamins and minerals or not?

The top. This is where you pour out the milk. Just a quick twist and you are done. In the past, we had to cut off the thick corners if we want to drink from cartoons. Nowadays, it is so simple. That is one thing good about modern “technology”, it makes life easier.

It is surprising that a lot of people don’t know that drinking plenty of water regularly is very important for health. Sure, eating raw vegetables and fruits is something in the positive direction and it really helps improve your health, but we all need water.  Well, it is true that I am not the healthiest of them all, but I have not been seriously ill for the past year or so, which considering that in the past, I normally get some illness every 4 months or so, is quite an achievement. Hey, I know some people who are in a worse state than me. Even those younger than me are not spared. People often ask me what is the major trick to my good health.

First of all, I tell them that I drink Kefir everyday. Kefir is kind of like a drinkable yogurt and is full of probiotic goodness. However, it is very tart and most people can’t even stand the smell of it. So, making Kefir is out of the question for most.  Then I tell them I add more raw vegetables and fruits into my diet. They tell me that is rather difficult to do, especially in Singapore. Well, that is true. Considering that we all (most of us anyway) have less than an hour for lunch, you won’t be able to travel far for your lunch. Unless you are working in the city area, you aren’t going to find anywhere  selling raw stuff like a salad bar. And when you get back home, you are probably just too tired to prepare your own food. So that is yet another hurdle. Then it stuck me – the simplest of them all! Drink plenty of water! I tell them go ahead and drink as much water as you can. Drink beyond your thirst.  Every morning when you wake up, drink about 2 or 3 cups of H2o, preferably which have been boiled. And when in the office, just keep a flask of water and drink constantly. The reason is that we need water to clear our bowels. Without water, all the fiber in the world won’t help one bit. And with the level of poisons in our body, what better way to detox than to drink plenty of water and clearing them through our bowels. When it comes to clearing toxins, we think of exercising and those spas and so on. But the main method of which our body clears away waste is through the bowels. So help your body remove waste by drinking plenty of water. And research have shown that if you want to lose weight, drinking plenty of water helps a lot. So girls if you want to lose some weight safely, why not try the simple method of drinking more water.

If you don’t believe me, try it out yourself. It is not like you are going to get water poisoning, unless you are drinking like 30 litres of water per day. No sane person can drink that much anyway. There is no harm in trying this. And it cost nothing. Water is virtually free. You will actually see results very fast. In a matter of weeks, you will find your body feeling lighter and more energetic instead of being bloated all the time. That is because your body is able to remove waste more efficiently. Adding fruits and fiber rich foodstuff helps as well.
