This is one of the more expensive canned tuna on the shelves. Not very sure why are they more expensive than the rest but at the very least, they taste rather decent. In fact, I really like this brand.  And Heinz seemed to be a very popular brand around here and in many countries. I read that they dominate about 40% of the US canned tuna market which is pretty interesting. In Singapore, it is dominated by Ayam Brand, which is everywhere! Nearly every household in Singapore has purchased a can of Ayam Brand tuna before.

Anyway, we are here to review the Heinz (StarKist) Tuna with Ginger & Soy. Yes, you will get small ginger slices with the Tuna and drenched in Soy Sauce. Now, that is pretty interesting twist to the regular tomato or curry or oil soaked canned tuna we find in the stores. And I am sure that Heinz would not disappoint.

The can of Heinz (StarKist) Tuna With Ginger & Soy. Cool! On the left, is that a very studious looking tuna fish or a dolphin? Looks a bit more like a dolphin than a tuna fish, doesn’t it? Of course, I have never seen an actual tuna fish in my life but I have seen a lot of dolphins, so this might not be that accurate. lol!

Good, not much sodium here as compared to the previous canned tuna (FairPrice canned tuna in green curry) we reviewed. Furthermore, no cholesterol! Wow, most health conscience people will be glad to be eating this. However the label does not state the amount of trans-fat nor does it tell us how much Omega-3 fatty acids is in the can. One of the most important benefit of eating fatty fish like tuna is the Omega-3 fatty acids in the fish.

Hey, this is a good source of DHA. If you would like to read more on DHA, please take a look at this wiki page. It is an Omega-3 essential fatty acid which is very important to your mental well-being and helps reduce some heart diseases.Unless you consume a lot of seafood (especially fatty fish) or nuts, most of us don’t consume enough Omega-3 fatty acids. That is why a lot of nutritionists are encouraging us to eat more fish.

Oh, before I forget, the ingredients are Tuna, sunflower oil, water, ginger, sugar ginger flavour, soy sauce and salt. And this is the product of Thailand. However, I am nor sure where the Tuna itself is from. Doubt it is farmed from Thailand seas. What is surprising is that I don’t see anything on the label that tells me the tuna is farmed using dolphin friendly methods?

Most canned foodstuff have a long shelf life. The best before date is Aug 2011!

Ahhh….this comes with some instructions on how to open the can. Just follow these instructions and you will be enjoying great tasting and delicious tuna in no time. And thank god we don’t have to fiddle around with can openers anymore. Takes a lot of effort to just open one can if you need a can opener.

Okay, this is the end of the review. I hope that you have thought about adding more fish into your daily diet. It tastes just damn nice and it is relatively cheap. Plus you get all the health benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids. So, go ahead and grab yourself some canned tuna or salmon and have a great “feast”. See you all later!

FairPrice Tuna Flakes In Green Curry

Hmmm…..you must be getting disgusted with this blog. Everyday on the blog, you read about canned stuff like canned Tuna, canned Salmon, canned fruits, canned this, canned that. That’s not interesting you say. I should review like some fancy chocolate filled cream puff from some fancy bakery located at some fancy city mall. But isn’t that what everyone is blogging about already? After a while, that gets boring too. In fact, if you were to go online and search through Singapore blogs, you will realize that we have tons of blogs like that. So might as well do something that no one is doing. Of course, it might be that no one is reading this blog in the first place. Ahhh….doesn’t matter to me. I am not seeking attention anyway. Of course, if I was much more good looking than what I am now, I will be posting pictures of me posing with the food stuff I am about to review.

Let’s continue shall we? I am reviewing FairPrice Tuna Flakes in Green Curry.  I love green curry. It is not as spicy as those super burning red curries while still maintaining the aroma and texture of curries. Plus if you add Tuna flakes to the equation, you should get a mighty tasty treat for yourself.

Yes, this is the can of FairPrice Tuna Flakes in Green Curry. You can not escape NTUC FairPrice if you are living in Singapore. They are everywhere and you will soon be assimilated by the bog. Don’t fight it, you will never win. Might as well enjoy it, right?

Sorry about the blurred photo. Look at the label on the top left of the picture. That’s a dolphin. It means that the Tuna is farmed with Dolphin friendly methods which possibly means that no dolphins were harmed during the process. Oh, check out the nutrition information. It contains no trans fat but I think the sodium amount is just too much. I am guessing most of the sodium comes from the other additives rather than the tuna itself.

I wonder why don’t they provide us with the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids in the can, just like what Ayam Brand does? It is pretty important, especially to people like me who consumes tuna or salmon due to the health benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids in those fish.

The ingredients list. Tuna, Water, Coconut milk, Chilli, Garlic, Lemongrass, Galangal, Shallot, Tumeric, Kaffir lime peel, Sugar, Sunflower oil, Red Chilli, Sweet Basil, Salt, Kaffir lime leaf and Guar gum. Cool! Just like some exotic Thai dish nobody ever dreamed of cooking! And it comes in a can! Convenient no?

Oh yes, this little can consist of 185g of green curry tuna. Wonderful isn’t it?

The expiry date is 12th May 2010. Still with more than 1 year of shelf life.

Yes, this is where you open the can. Just push the tab up and then pull all the way back. And it will reveal tasty green curry tuna for you to enjoy. I am sure I will.

FairPrice Tuna Chunks In Chilli & Tomato

Probably not made by NTUC Fairprice themselves. Most likely they are subcontracted by NTUC to make this “housebrand” our government keeps telling us to purchase to “save money”. So, don’t worry, it is not full of crap tuna meat and cheap oil. That is what you would expect if it was really made by FairPrice. Hey, you will be surprised to learn that sometimes these “housebrands” are actually made by real manufacturers who have been in the line for decades. So don’t be shocked to see the can of FairpriceTuna exactly the same as some of the other leading brands. And yes, not all housebrands are cheap. In fact, some of them are more expensive than other brands. So don’t be conned into thinking that housebrands are always cheaper. Yup, the newspaper says that it is supposed to be cheaper and encourages us all to get housebrands, but make sure you do a price comparison first before purchasing.

Anyway, I purchased this FairPrice Tuna Chinks In Chilli & Tomato just yesterday from….you guessed it – NTUC FairPrice! One thing I realized about NTUC is that they have surprisingly less variety in canned seafood than Shop N Save. Even the small Shop N Save Supermarket next to myhouse stocks more variety of canned Seafood than the NTUC at Bishan. Not very sure exactly why this is so. Perhaps they think that canned seafood is not popular among Singaporeans? However, I also realized that Singaporeans do seem to like canned tuna, seeing that there were a lot of people buying canned tuna at NTUC. But a sad thing I found is that Singaporeans don’t look at the label first before purchasing. They look at the price, grab and go. Not exactly a good thing in my opinion if one does not check the label before purchasing stuff.

Yeeek! Ugly ass picture of the tuna.  Yes, you can see the FairPrice logo on the top. And it should be owned by NTUC. And check out the dolphin logo on the right – the Tuna is farmed with Dolphin friendly methods.

The ingredients are Tuna, tomato, suace, spices, soya oil, onion, garlic, chilli and salt. And yes, it ontains no trans-fat! Great.  Too bad about the sodium levels, but this is canned tuna has tons of other ingredients which adds to the sodium level. So if you are looking for something with less sodium, try just plain tuna.

Hmmm…product of The Philippines. See, it is not made in some back door NTUC supermarket. Check out the solgan – FairPrice – Satisfaction Guaranteed. Good Quality. Best Price. Hehehehe. Oh, the net weight of this Tuna can is 185g of yummy goodness.

Canned seafood really last very long. The best before date is 31th December 2011! Election year in Singapore.

Go ahead and open the can. It might not look tempting at first, but once you have a taste of the canned tuna, you will certainly look forward to eating tuna for breakfast. I know that most people will find the canned tuna a bit disgusting at first, but I can safely say, you will not regret having your first bite of canned tuna. It just taste heavenly and goes great on bread.

Ayam Brand Sardines

Yes, the title is correct. It is now time to review canned Sardines! Yes, I had said before that I hate Sardines but now that I know the health benefits from consuming different types of seafood (especially fish), I have to “swallow” my pride and eat Sardines as well. It is also surprising to see our local supermarkets full of canned sardines, canned tuna, canned salmon, canned spam, canned vegetables, canned pork  and others. Not sure why it is so. They have shelves and shelves of canned foodstuff. And it is not that cheap either. Maybe about 10%-20% cheaper than the frozen foodstuff, which probably taste slightly better than the canned variety. Maybe because it is very convenient. All you have to do to consume canned foodstuff is just to open up the can and either heat the can or directly consume it from the can. That’s what I find best about canned foodstuff. Sure, they are processed food, but if you check carefully the labels of the canned stuff, you should be able to find which ones have good nutritional values.

Anyway, I bought this Ayam Brand Sardines from NTUC. Ayam Brand seems to be hugely popular in Singapore. About 60% of the canned seafood is manufactured by Ayam Brand. So, in the upcoming weeks, you should see a lot of reviews of canned stuff made by Ayam Brand.

Woohooo! Sardines in Tomato Sauce. Made with a Mediterranean Recipe with chilli & lime.  This word Spain on the right could possibly mean that the Sardines are from Spain. Well, that’s what I hope anyway. And I didn’t know they catch Sardines nowadays with such a small boat. If I am not wrong, small boats mean that they would go out in the morning and return in the evening with their catch. This also means it is fresh(er). But it is not as profitable as bigger boats which stay in the oceans and seas for days at end. This means not as fresh.

Same thing at the side. Yes, 100g of Sardines and other additives.

Check it out – No transfat! No preservatives and no added MSG! And look at the amount of Omega-3 essential fatty acids in the Sardines! Health food in a can! That is why consuming fish is encouraged by nutritionist everywhere. And I completely agree with them. They are packed full of goodness!

The ingredients are Sardines (obviously), Tomato Paste, Olive Oil, Sugar, Soy Bean Oil, Dried Chilli, Salt, Natural Lime Flavour and Xanthan Gum. Oh wait, it says that is is manufactured in Malaysia! Not to poke at our friendly neighbours up north, but I thought it was manufactured in Spain for Ayam Brand.

This beautifully designed can of canned Sardine is now ready for your consumption. Open it up and eat my friends!

Well, that’s it. Hope that this little review is helpful to you. I doubt it but at least it is interesting enough to make you want to think about purchasing some canned seafood next time you are at the supermarket. They are relatively cheap, delicious and so very convenient. And healthy too!

It’s time for a list! Well, this time, it’s a list of my favourite songs. Yes, a list of MY favourite songs. Some people have different tastes and preferences, so it is not possible for me to create a list of “best songs”. Everyone will have sometime to say about this song and that song and that some songs sucks while others are just great. And I am sure that some of the songs listed here will not be agreeable with some of you. It is okay. Everyone is different. So please don’t complain about the songs or make fun of it. We shouldn’t go around poking at other people’s preferences, especially when it comes to music. One man’s meat is another man’s poision.

Anyway, here are the list of my favourite songs. These are not arranged in any order whatsoever.

  • Here I Go Again – Whitesnake
  • Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley
  • I Want To Know – Foreigner
  • Scientist – Coldplay
  • Baba O’Riley – The Who
  • Silent Lucidity – Queensryche
  • The Man Comes Around – Johnny Cash
  • One – U2
  • Happy Together – The Turtles
  • Sweet Child O’Mine – Guns N’ Roses
  • Zombie – The Cranberries
  • Total Eclipse Of The Heart – Bonnie Tyler
  • Ohio – Crosby, Still, Nash & Young
  • Faithfully – Journey
  • I Remember You – Skid Row
  • Hotel California – The Eagles
  • Wonderful Tonight – Eric Clapton
  • Have You Ever Seen The Rain – Creedance Clearwater Revival

Yes, I grew up listening to a bit of rock here and there. I am not really into hardrock like several of my friends. They are black leather and guitars which I am not interested in. I just like to listen to good music. Hey, I listen to a little pop and rap as well. But I am not a real fan of pop or rap. I hope that some of the songs I listed here will bring back some enjoyable memories you had. I am sure that if you grew up in Singapore, you should have heard these songs one time or another.

If you have some songs which you really like, please post them here. I would like to know what other enjoy listening to as well. Ciao!

Kefir Grains Sharing Part II

Hello all readers! If you have been to this blog a few times before, you would realize that I am a vivid Kefir fan. Yes, that means that I have been making my own Kefir and enjoying it very much. Making Kefir is simple and of course, I am reaping the health benefits. If you have no idea what Kefir is or does, please refer to Dom’s Kefir Site. There you will find a wealth of information on Kefir grains and what they can do for you. I have been making Kefir for about 4 months now and it has really improved my health. I no longer feel tired everyday and for people like me who takes the crowded public transport to work everyday (with huge number of people coughing and sneezing in my face), it offers me protection against infection and diseases. No, I am not saying that it is a miracle drink but it has improved my immunity against diseases. It acts as a first line of defense against those nasties. For that, I am glad. Who wants to be ill anyway? It is not like coughing is a fun hobby that everyone enjoys right?

Oh, if you guys would like some Kefir grains to make your own Kefir, please email me (admin AT efwsg.org). I have already sent the grains to about a dozen people living in Singapore. And most of them have received the grains in good order and are happily making their own Kefir drink. I hope that their health will improve after taking the Kefir. No, I am sure that their health will improve as it did for me. However, sometimes I am swamped with requests and as you guys should know, Kefir grains are living organisms which needs to grow, so I might not have enough grains to share at that moment. Not to worry, I will definitely send them once I have grains to share. Of course, it might take a while for the grains to grow. So, please be patient. Currently, I have about 4 pending requests.

And no monetary compensation for the grains is necessary. However, you can do me a favour instead. Share your grains! Tell others about the health benefits of regularly drinking Kefir. And if possible, help me share your Kefir grains through this blog. If a request comes along and I don’t have enough grains to share, help me by sharing your own grains. This way, perhaps we can create a “sharing culture” among us Kefir drinkers? Of course, the postage fee will still need to be paid by the requester. What say you?

Got this on offer. It was on sale for S$1.15 per piece at Shop N Save, so I grabbed the last two fast. I believe the reason why it is so cheap is because it is about to expire soon. The best before date is 28th April and they need to sell it off fast. But it is still drinkable and I have about 2 more months of shelf life left. There, sometimes you will get great offers if you were to go and take a few minutes off and carefully look at what they have on the offer shelf. Shop N Save has this shelf which they put all their super offers on and that is the first place I visit when I go to Shop N Save. Hey, I am not rich okay? And even for those who are rich, saving a little money is always a good idea.

This Pauls brand of UHT Milk is one of the most popular milk beverage in Australia.Or so they claim. However, I have tasted their UHT milk before and I have to say, it does taste quite nice. Unlike the others which I have tried, this one at least has the milk aroma. You aren’t drinking whiten water. It feels and taste like milk. That’s very surprising considering that this is UHT milk.

Pauls Trim low fat milk.

Here you go, the one with the English label. Not too sure why I took the photo of the mandarin site of the pack. Probably because I was confused and getting a bit too old.  This is Pauls Trim Low Fat Milk Beverage! Anyway, Pauls is the leading Australian Brand and is for people with an active lifestyle. Oh, and this is made from fresh milk! Hooray! Hope you like the packaging like I do.

Yup, no preservatives. That’s what we all should be looking for. Preservatives aren’t really good for us. Oh, this milk is not suitable for children under one year old, mainly because it is low fat and little ones need all the fat of full cream milk.

Great. Confirmed that this is manufactured in Australia. The ingredients are skimmed milk and whole milk. This is a bit weird though. Why combine both Skimmed milk and whole milk? Perhaps this is not non-fat milk and a little more fat is needed, thus the need to add some whole milk to the skimmed milk? Makes sense?

Look at the best before date – 28/04/2009. That is why it is so cheap. But it is still fresh and drinkable. I mean, it is Ultra Heat Treated milk, there is nothing to worry about! We are not going to get infections or anything from drinking the milk before that date. And drinking milk is good for you. However, as you guys know, I am using this milk to make Milk Kefir. The probiotic powerhouse of a drink.
