Ayam Brand Salmon Spread!

Sorry guys, been very busy these few days with work and preparing for some stuff at home. And my nephew fell sick and I had to take care of him. What to do? Contrary to popular myth, we Singaporeans are not super free and have tons of time in our hands to do stuff. I know I have very little time left for myself to do any of my hobbies after work and blogging. I guess some high ranking members of parliament felt differently. They don’t realize that not everyone has personal assistants and maids in their homes to do everything for them. Aiya, how different it is when you are on top.

Okay, so we begin with the review on this Ayam Brand Salmon Spread. I bought this from NTUC a few days back and found it pretty delicious. However, please understand that this is a spread, which certainly means that there are a lot of other additives in the spread other than the Salmon. In fact, I am guessing that about half of the contents of the can is made up of those additives. If you are looking for real Salmon, I would suggest you to find other varieties than this “Salmon Spread”.  Or even try Tuna. This is mainly used to spread on toast. I have nothing against making this into a spread but the amount of other additives in this spread seemed to be way too much.

Comes with a spoon for easy spreading. And look it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids! Great stuff! The main reason why I am consuming a lot of Tuna and Salmon these days is because of the Omega 3 fatty acids they are rich in. Hey, I am not getting any younger and really need to take care of my health and eat healthier foods!

This is a special snack, ideal for crackers and bread! Cool. It comes with a plastic spoon.  However, the spoon does make it hard to scoop out the Salmon from the can.

Wow, I didn’t know that this Ayam Brand has been around since 1892! That means that it has more than 100 years of history. More than Singapore! I also didn’t know that the Ayam Brand logo is actually a belt with a rooster in the middle.

Yes, as most of the canned foodstuff in Singapore, this is a product of Thailand. Looks like we get most of them from Thailand or Philippines.

The ingredients are Salmon, Soya Bean Oil, Waterchestnut, Vinegar, Sugar, Sweet Corn, Carrot, Thickener, Egg Powder and Salt. Too much other additives I would say. But it does make it less fishy than what you would find in other canned Salmon. And oh, check out the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids there is! 610mg per 100g! That means that consuming this can of 170g of Salmon spread, you would get  1.37g of Omega 3 fatty acids! That’s quite a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids. And this doesn’t come with any preservative or added MSG.

For those on diet, you should check out the total amount of fat in this can before consuming and the amount of sodium as well.

The best before date is 25th of Feburary 2011. That’s still some 2 years  shelf life for this can. Don’t you find the canning process simply amazing? Salmon or any fish usually can last a few days before it goes bad and this processing can increase the shelf life without adding preservatives or whatever for years!
