Yup, this is the Cold Storage / Shop N Save housebrand. And yes, the government is encouraging us to all go and buy housebrand to save money due to the poor economic outlook in Singapore. First of all, I find it pretty stupid, considering that the prices of some housebrands are more expensive. Furthermore, the quality of some of the products are in question. You should be aiming for value for money, instead of the cheapest. Having choices is important, so you should not always go for the housebrand. Look around, you might be surprised to find that some of the other brands have better value than the housebrands. Hey, housebrands also need to make money what!

Anyway, I will be reviewing the No Frills Tuna in Oil so don’t fall asleep. I am currently in love with tuna. I tried it because it is supposedto be full of Omega-3 fatty acids which is actually brain food. Old people like me need more brain food because we are old and my brains aren’t as it is used to be. Now, I am really loving tuna. I am pretty sure that if I get tuna from outside which doesn’t come in a can, the taste of the tuna would be better. But for now, canned tuna will have to do. I am just too lazy to do any cooking either. Just imagine the hassle of cutting the tuna, washing it, then mixing with herbs and spices and cooking it. Probably takes a few hours, considering that I am a lousy cook.

Woohooo! Something to smile about! This 185g of canned tuna is soaked in oil, as shown in the above picture. You can see the words “Tuna in Oil” as well as to the right “in oil”. I believe that they don’t want their customers to miss out that this tuna is soaked in tuna.

Okay, there is the nutrition information. A little more fattening than other brands of canned tuna (except of course those mayo tuna) which is surprising. I had thought that most manufacturers would be smart enough nowadays to realize that a lot of health conscious consumers are looking at tuna as an healthy alternative to meat. Even Ayam Brand now comes with a”light” version of their canned tuna.

The ingredients of this canned tuna includes tuna, soybean oil, water and salt. Oh, “this product contains fish and soybean product”. And why is there water in the canned tuna?

Ahh…product of Thailand. Again, it seems that most canned tuna we find in Singapore is manufactured in Thailand.

Oh, by the way, it seems that in their quest to be the cheapest canned tuna, this No Frills canned tuna doesn’t come with their pull up tabs. So you need a can opener in order for you to open the can. Smart, now I have to spend so much effort to open this can just to get to 185g of tuna meat. Thanks a lot!

Isn’t it so very cool? Even tuna comes in mineral water nowadays. Apparently plain tap water isn’t good enough for some of us, so they have to use the more expensive mineral water as substitute. We must really be too spolit for choice to be needing mineral water instead of just plain water. However, I think in this case, the mineral water is used to replace oil or brine which is usually used to soak the tuna in such cans. Quite a number of consumers eat tuna because they believe that it is healthy for them, so adding oil or salt (brine) is not a recommended option for health seeking consumers. So, the next best thing is just water. Mineral water makes it sound better than just plain water. In my opinion, it is all about marketing.

The Ayam Brand Tuna chunks in mineral water. Note that this is Tuna Light which means that it has low fat content compared to the other brands.  If you are looking for healthy stuff, look for this “Light” wording on the cans.

Very little saturated fat and no trans-fat! And low sodium content as well! Very good. However, the Omega-3 fatty acids seemed to be much less than the other canned tuna I have tried. Could it be due to the mineral water which dissolves the Omega-3 fatty acids in the tuna? If you compared this mineral water tuna with the one in olive oil, the amount of Omega-3 fatty acids is halved in the mineral water tuna! How did that happen?

The ingredients in this can is just Tuna and mineral water. The net weight of the can is 185g, full of tuna goodness! I like it.

Yes, the tuna is farmed with Dolphin friendly methods. Good, I always like dolphins and I would hate to see the dolphins harmed in any way when they are doing their farming. I would highly recommend consumers to check whether their suppliers of tuna is farming fish using dolphin friendly methods.

Well, this is the end of my little review. Hope you don’t mind that I have taken less photos this time round. I was a bit distracted when I was taking the photos and thus somehow I forgot to take some of the angels. Please forgive me.

Got this from Shop N Save. And it’s a cheap one. For a pack of 20 bags of green tea, it cost about S$1.80. I normally drink SOD tea which I like very much but it tends to stain my teeth. For the past few months, I have been drinking the SOD tea nearly everyday and my teeth now looks a bit brownish or yellowish, no matter how much I brush my teeth. And I read from the Internet that green tea stains less than this brown tea I have been taking. So, I decided to try out green tea as an alternative. True, I am not very choosy about tea but usually I find green tea tasteless and bland. I prefer my tea a little more complex. Ya, I know, the Japanese love green tea but that does not mean that I must follow them as well.

The pack of 20 green tea bags. This is from Xiamen Tea Import & Export, so I am guessing that this means that they not only export out tea for sale, they bring in tea from other parts of the world as well?

Yes, 20 tea bags. They are afraid that you might not know they have 20 bags of tea leaves (powder), so they put the numbers in large font. Check out the ingredients – just green tea! Great! And yes, it is made in China, which at times can be very scary.

Another view of the side.

Alright, this is the picture of the tea package. No, the actual tea bag is in this package. I believe that the package is to cover the tea bag to protect the tea bag from exposure.Check out the Sea Dyke brand logo.

Open here and you will find green tea. Just put the bag in hot water and let it simmer for a few minutes. I normally let it rest for 3-5 minutes before taking it out of my tea cup.

Green tea leaves are steamed and then processed. While black tea is first fermented and then processed. The thing about the fermentation is that it might convert some of the health-giving properties to something less effective. We all know that green tea is rich in anti-oxidant like EGCG which stops the growth of cancer cells. The fermentation process might destroy some of them and thus, some researchers believe that black tea or any fermented tea may be less effective.  Of course, new research might disprove this altogether.

Well, for me, I just take whatever tea I can find. If black tea makes my teeth look yellowish and disgusting, I will switch to green tea. Hopefully, I like the taste of green tea. But considering that this Sea Dyke brand of tea is a very cheapo one, it might not be the correct candidate for this. But we will see.

Ahh…got myself yet another probiotic stuff. This time, it is the Vitagen probiotic drink. Yes, most of you guys would know that Vitagen is just a copy of Yakult, the very popular cultured milk drink. Well, I have to tell you guys that although they probably look the same, they are not really. It is like saying that a yogurt manufacturer is copying another yogurt manufacturer. Yes, they are all cultured milk drinks but they are using different “good bacteria” to culture their milk. For Yakult, they use some sort of l.casei strain which I can’t pronounce. For Vitagen, they are using some bacteria strain from Denmark. However, in my opinion, they are also very different in taste. And yes, Vitagen does taste less sweet. That is one thing I like about Vitagen.

I would highly recommend everyone to drink a bottle of either Yakult or Vitagen per day. It does contains probiotics which I am sure you guys should know by now, it helps to maintain a healthy gut flora. A healthy gut flora in turn makes our digestive system work better and also suppresses the growth of bad bacteria. All in all, it is a very important thing for everyone. And it is also convenient. Just grab a bottle from your fridge and drink up on the way to work. One bottle contains about 125ml of probiotic drink which would at most take about 2 minutes for most people. Of course, you can always take yogurt or Kefir, but for most busy people, it might be less attractive than drinking from a bottle of Yakult or Vitagen.

Okay, here we have is the 5 packs of LB flavour. I am not sure what LB is, but I am guessing that it is the original flavour.

Yes, fat free, high fiber and the live probiotics is from Denmark. Check out on the right, it comes with both probiotics and prebiotics. The prebiotics is the high fibre which helps support the growth of good bacteria in your gut. Think of it as food and supplement for the good bacteria. There are a lot of discussions on the benefits of prebiotics since it might also help support the growth of bad bacteria in your gut as well. But if you have a healthy gut, you shouldn’t worry about the prebiotics.

Oh, Vitagen seems to be harping on the “Less Sugar” thingy. For me, I don’t really care about the sugar content in the cultured milk drink, just as long as it is not excessive. And if it was too excessive, I am sure that nobody would want to drink it anyway. If you are watching your weight however, I am Vitagen would be a better alternative than Yakult.

That’s right, Vitagen Less Sugar cultured milk drink is specially formulated for consumers who are health conscious and are concerned about their sugar intake. Compared to regular cultured milk drinks, they have at leats 50% more sugar than Vitagen Less Sugar. Thank the gods!

And every bottle has billions of live probiotic cultures (good bacteria) to maintain a healthy digestive system. It is also high in dietary fibre (prebiotic fibre) tto aid digestion and help support the growth of good bacteria in the intestines. Well, for me, I am more interested in the probiotics and what it can do for my health. The prebiotics is not that important. And seriously, if you have a healthy gut, you don’t need to worry about having prebiotics to support the growth of good bacteria anyway.

The ingredients are as follows: Dietary fiber (Inuin & polydextrose), fructose, sucrose, milk solids, glucose, permitted stabilisers, permitted flavourings and lactobacillus cultures (probiotics). Basically it is like most cultured milk products. They difference would be just the amount of sugar, other flavourings and the type of bacteria used. And yes, it is made in Singapore! Cool! I am always keen to support made in Singapore products.

Do note that this Vitagen bottle is slightly bigger than the Yakult one. 125ml compared to Yakult’s 80ml. Of course, most people will choose Yakult, seeing that it is from Japan. But from what I can see, it seems that Vitagen does provide more benefits to the host than Yakult does. However, I really hope that Vitagen is not putting ingredients into their cultured milk drink just for the sake of looking good. It must provide real health benefits to their consumers as well.

That’s the bottle of Vitagen.

Ahhh….the Healthier Probiotics Drink. I like it. Not so sweet and doesn’t leave any stickiness in your mouth. I purchased the LB flavour pack. I think I will try the other fruit flavours some other time.

Well, this is the same ingredient list as mentioned above.

This is the end of my little review. I am not taking any sides on which is better – Yakult or Vitagen. Everyone has their own opinions on this, so it is better left to the individual. Some people like Vitagen because it is less sweet, some like Vitagen because it contains more goodness, while others like Yakult because it is from Japan or that it taste better. Well, if you like any of them, it is fine by me. Just remember that drink one bottle per day to help maintain a healthy digestive system!

Yup, I just completed yet another one of those very tedious and tiring reservist duties that the Singapore government loves to dish out to it’s male citizens. Apparently it is not enough for you after you have completed the 2 and a half years of national service ( where they pay you very little money), they still require you to come back year after year to do pointless reservist duties. I wonder why can’t the Singapore Armed Forces do with just the 2 and a half years of national service but still need to call back reservist (they call it NSmen) to “defend” the country. If they cannot effectively make use of the national servicemen, then they should find ways and means to solve it instead of using the easier but less effective solution of calling back reservists who are working outside and are usually much older than the national servicemen. What I mean is that if you are given a certain manpower to defend the country, they should make use of them efficiently and not yet again ask the reservist to do the dirty work for the government’s incompetence.

What is the purpose of calling up people who are 30 to 40 years old to defend the country when you have 18 year olds to do it more effectively. Furthermore, these younger national servicemen are doing it full time and are better able to be trained faster. The reservists are working outside and it is very possible that they have forgotten everything that was taught to them during their national service period. Tell me that you can remember what was taught several years back? No way and since they are called back like once per year, you can’t expect them to remember much as well. And since they are not full time national servicemen, they have their own work and their families to worry about. I doubt anyone can expect them to concentrate on their national duties as well.

One thing I really hate about the Singapore government is that they failed to understand what they have done. In Singapore, the job market is very tight. We have a lot competition from foreigners (yet another of the Singapore’s government easy but ineffective solution) and businesses and employers are now looking to hire foreigners instead of Singaporeans. And which employer would be willing to allow their employees to go off for 2 to 4 weeks for reservists every year? Smaller companies with less manpower would be even less willing to hire Singaporean males because of this. Even large MNCs don’t want the hassle of dealing with their Singaporean staff and will choose to hire foreigners. Singapore’s open door policy allows that to happen easily even with the foreigner quota.

First Choice Tuna In Vegetable Oil

Well, had some free time finally to do yet another canned tuna review. This time, it is the First Choice Tuna in Vegetable Oil. If I am not wrong, the brand First Choice is by Cold Storage which is also under the same group controlling Shop N Save. Yup, this is the housebrand the government is talking about everyday. What is surprising is that the First Choice brand of canned tuna isn’t exactly the cheapest canned tuna you can find out there. There are quite a number of brands which offer cheaper alternatives to this “housebrand“.  So, make sure you know what you are getting at before you pick the housebrands. Furthermore, the quality of housebrands might not be as good as other brands. In my opinion, the most trusted brand for canned tuna is actual “Heinz”. I have tried several of the tuna and they taste great but of course, the prices are at the higher range. What they say is true, if you want good quality, you have to pay for it.

Anyway, let’s get the review started.

The First Choice Tuna in Vegetable Oil. Nothing too fancy, it is just tuna in cheap vegetable oil. Unlike most other canned tuna which comes with the more expensive (and healthier) olive oil. Hey, you are eating tuna because of the Omega 3 fatty acids which is supposed to help your heart, right?  Makes no sense to have the tuna soaked in vegetable if that is the case. Of course, I am not saying that vegetable oil is bad for your heart, but at least oilve oil also helps your heart.

185g of tuna! Hooray!

Check out the ingredient list. It consists of yellowfin tuna, soybean oil, water and salt. That’s it! Good for us. I really hate eating tuna with too much additives. Feels like I am eating something else. And oh, sorry about the overexposed picture to the right. Anyway, I didn’t know that Soybean Oil can be considered as Vegetable oil.

Nothing impressive. This one comes with some saturated fat, which is surprising. And it still have quite a large amount of sodium in it.  I was hoping for a more healthier product than that actually. I am sure that a lot of consumers have came to realize that eating tuna provides a ton of health benefits, so they should make their product even healthier in order to compete. Apparently, First Choice (and Cold Storage) don’t seem to care on bit. It is no wonder that most people don’t even know that First Choice has a housebrand for canned tuna.

And how much Omega 3 fatty acids is in this can? This is very important. It seems that only Ayam Brand labels the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids in their products.

Tons of useless information.

Yup, it does come with some instructions on how to open the can.

Well, this is the end of the review. I know that reviewing canned tuna is pretty boring, but reviewing this First Choice canned Tuna is probably the most boring one yet! I nearly fell asleep writing this review. lol!

Classic Red Bull

Yup, going for field camp soon and I am sure that I need some “energy drink” for the tough 3 days and 3 nights outfield. As you know, I normally don’t...

Yup, going for field camp soon and I am sure that I need some “energy drink” for the tough 3 days and 3 nights outfield. As you know, I normally don’t need to expand so much energy in my normal work. Well, what else should I be getting except Red Bull? In Singapore, the most popular is Red Bull, the one and only energy drink. However from what I read, this isn’t exactly an energy drink. The only stimulant is actually caffeine, which you normally relate to coffee. The rest of the ingredients are mainly to calm your senses and make you feel better. The Taurine found in Red Bull will help make you calmer and more clear headed. Thus making it very effective when dealing with stress. Furthermore, it comes with Inositol, which too have a calming effect on your body. Yes, Red Bull does not provide you with any real energy boost but makes you feel better overall. You will be surprised to know that a lot of people who felt calmer and more clear-headed also felt more energetic. I am guessing that after so many field camps with this Red Bull, I tend to understand why.

Anyway, I will be bringing 3 cans of the Red Bull “Energy Drink” with me to field camp. And they aren’t exactly cheap. One can of the classic Red Bull costs about S$1.25. So 3 small cans will set you back about S$3.75. And from the ingredients list, I find that this is seriously overpriced. It isn’t worth it at all. If you need a real drink that helps to clam your nerves and make you clear-minded, I would suggest you to start taking Kefir. It definitely provides you with more nutrients and probiotics than what Red Bull can offer. But if you are like me who have to go field camp where you can’t easily make Kefir yourself, then Red Bull will have to do. And it does come in a handy aluminum can.

Woohooo! The classic Red Bull energy drink! Look at those two red bulls trying to horned each other. I wonder what is the outcome of such a match.

Anyway, did you know that Red Bull was actually inspired by a Thai energy drink called Krating Daeng? The logo of the Red Bull is exactly the same as the logo of the Thai energy drink Krating Daeng. No wonder it is so popular in Thailand. My friends told me that in Thailand, everyone drinks Red Bull, even for breakfast! And they cost like one quarter of what they charge in Singapore. It seems that in Singapore, we often get the short end of the stick.

Check the ingredient lists out! The most important of them is Taurine and Inositol. It also comes with some Vitamins, especially Vitamin B which is good for you. Do understand that this is a manufactured and processed drink. You should not consume too much of such drinks, especially in one short. I had a bad experience a few years back when I drink 3 cans of Red Bull and fell sick soon after that. I am not sure that drinking Red Bull caused me to fall sick, but I am guessing that it did play a part.

Yes, perhaps what they mean by energy drink is that it provides you with sugars so that your body can burn them and hence, provide energy for your body? Well, in that case, plain old sugar too can be considered as an energy food. lol! Check out the recommended consumption – 3 cans a day. I am guessing that if you follow what they tell you and drink 3 cans per day, you might find yourself feeling ill after that. I myself would humbly recommend at most, 1 can per day. I don’t trust processed and sugar-filled drinks anymore.

Oh, this can contains 250ml of “energy drink”. No, I am not encouraging  you guys to go out and buy Red Bull to supplement your diet. In fact, I would discourage you to take Red Bull at all. There are better stuff out there to help keep yourself calm.

Ayam Brand Tuna Flakes In Oilve Oil Light

Yes, yes, I have been busy these few days yet again. And I apologize for that. I know that I have not updated this blog for quite some time now and it is not really good for me, as a blogger. Well, I really have several good reason. First of all, I had been busy with my work and taking care of my nephew. Now, I am in reservist. Would you believe that I am a soldier out to defend my country? Of course I am not a good soldier. In fact, I am probably one of the worst soldiers in my entire unit. However, it seems that the Singapore armed forces still need pathetic soldiers in their ranks, so here I am, in reservist yet again.

Anyway, I am currently out of camp for a few days so now I will be able to write some little reviews for you guys to enjoy. This time, it is the Ayam Brand Tuna Flakes in Olive Oil. Yes, this is a very popular brand in Singapore. You cannot miss it on the shelves of our local supermarkets. In fact, the majority of the canned tuna or salmon you find in Singapore, is from Ayam Brand. Yes, if you are living in Singapore, I am sure that you will have seen it before. If not, I really don’t know wha to say except that you should come out of your home more often. Or you should start attempting to eat more tuna or salmon for your health.

Ah-ha, this is the Ayam Brand Tuna Flakes in Olive Oil – Light! Yes, small pieces of tuna mixed with olive oil. Both of which are pretty good for your heart.  It contains less salt and less fat. Furthermore, it comes with the Healthier Choice logo! Cool! At the left side of the top label, you can see the Omega 3 logo. This tells you guys that this canned tuna should contain quite a good amount of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Wow, contains 38% less sodium and 42% less fat compared to regular canned tuna in oil. Not sure how exactly they did it, but they did (or at least claimed that they did).  So let’s keep our fingerc cross and hope that this is true.

This is the Ayam Brand Flakes in Olive Oil – Tuna Light side label. Not sure how that goes though. Don’t worry, just enjoy.  It does look quite delicious doesn’t it?

The ingredients include Tuna, Extra Virgin Oilve Oil and Salt. Very nice. This is one of the few canned tuna that comes with very little other additives other than the tuna and oil. I like it. Of course, the taste of this canned tuna might not be as nice as the others with tons of other additives. But you are taking Tuna because of it’s health benefits right? And seriously, it does taste quite nice without any of those additives too.

Check out the amount of Omega 3 and the amount of trans fat!  This can contains about 185g of canned tuna and olive oil.

If you are not sure what they mean by “light”, it means that the product is lower in fat or/and sodium than a regular product. Both which isn’t good for your health and should avoid as much as possible. Plus, they provide you some recipe to try with this one. For me, I just eat direct from the can. I am not really that fussy with my food anymore.

Ayam Brand Salmon Spread!

Sorry guys, been very busy these few days with work and preparing for some stuff at home. And my nephew fell sick and I had to take care of him. What...

Sorry guys, been very busy these few days with work and preparing for some stuff at home. And my nephew fell sick and I had to take care of him. What to do? Contrary to popular myth, we Singaporeans are not super free and have tons of time in our hands to do stuff. I know I have very little time left for myself to do any of my hobbies after work and blogging. I guess some high ranking members of parliament felt differently. They don’t realize that not everyone has personal assistants and maids in their homes to do everything for them. Aiya, how different it is when you are on top.

Okay, so we begin with the review on this Ayam Brand Salmon Spread. I bought this from NTUC a few days back and found it pretty delicious. However, please understand that this is a spread, which certainly means that there are a lot of other additives in the spread other than the Salmon. In fact, I am guessing that about half of the contents of the can is made up of those additives. If you are looking for real Salmon, I would suggest you to find other varieties than this “Salmon Spread”.  Or even try Tuna. This is mainly used to spread on toast. I have nothing against making this into a spread but the amount of other additives in this spread seemed to be way too much.

Comes with a spoon for easy spreading. And look it is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids! Great stuff! The main reason why I am consuming a lot of Tuna and Salmon these days is because of the Omega 3 fatty acids they are rich in. Hey, I am not getting any younger and really need to take care of my health and eat healthier foods!

This is a special snack, ideal for crackers and bread! Cool. It comes with a plastic spoon.  However, the spoon does make it hard to scoop out the Salmon from the can.

Wow, I didn’t know that this Ayam Brand has been around since 1892! That means that it has more than 100 years of history. More than Singapore! I also didn’t know that the Ayam Brand logo is actually a belt with a rooster in the middle.

Yes, as most of the canned foodstuff in Singapore, this is a product of Thailand. Looks like we get most of them from Thailand or Philippines.

The ingredients are Salmon, Soya Bean Oil, Waterchestnut, Vinegar, Sugar, Sweet Corn, Carrot, Thickener, Egg Powder and Salt. Too much other additives I would say. But it does make it less fishy than what you would find in other canned Salmon. And oh, check out the amount of Omega 3 fatty acids there is! 610mg per 100g! That means that consuming this can of 170g of Salmon spread, you would get  1.37g of Omega 3 fatty acids! That’s quite a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids. And this doesn’t come with any preservative or added MSG.

For those on diet, you should check out the total amount of fat in this can before consuming and the amount of sodium as well.

The best before date is 25th of Feburary 2011. That’s still some 2 years  shelf life for this can. Don’t you find the canning process simply amazing? Salmon or any fish usually can last a few days before it goes bad and this processing can increase the shelf life without adding preservatives or whatever for years!

Aged Apfelwein Taste Test

Well guys, if you remember I had made two batches of Apfelwein. One in September and the other in November. I am glad to inform you that I had a few...

Well guys, if you remember I had made two batches of Apfelwein. One in September and the other in November. I am glad to inform you that I had a few small bottles of Apfelwein left from the September batch! Yes! The original Apfelwein without any cinnamon or other flavouring. This is just apple juice and dextrose in it. Although I regret to say that the apple juice I used isn’t that good. Probably because it is made from concentrates and seem to have this sour aftertaste. Furthermore, the colour of the Apfelwein isn’t as golden as I like. It is more to the dark brownish side. And it is 7 months old! Again, I repeat, this is a 7 month old Apfelwein! I bet you can just imagine how this aged apple wine would be – mellow, complex and all so wonderful. And I have to tell you, it is exactly that!

I opened a bottle of Apfelwein a few days back and I can’t stop thinking about it. This is a completely different drink as compared to those about 1-2 months Apfelwein. It taste so very smooth and goes down your throat very easily. If you dislike the sourness of the young Apfelwein, try aging it for a few more months and have a taste again. You will be surprised to find that the Apple flavour coming up when you drink it, instead of the sour aftertaste. Overall, it is wondeful. I never expected such a big difference when it comes to aging. I knew that it would be more mellow and complex, but I never expected it to be so much more! Furthermore, I cannot taste the bitterness in the drink as well! Just amazing what aging can do. I guess this would encourage you wine makers to age your wines. In fact, all wines must be aged properly before they become drinkable. The Apfelwein is no exception.

Anyway, as you guys know by now, I have stopped brewing beer and making wines already. The reason is because of my health. I am now spending my time trying to improve my health. The super high fever I had in September is reason enough for me to start concentrating on being healthy. Getting sick at my old age is something which could lead to even more problems. I also find it much more difficult to recover from my illness. I was down (weak) for more than 2 weeks from that fever. So I hope you guys don’t mind me talking about yogurt, kefir, salmon, tuna, nuts, milk and others.
