Yup, this is the Cold Storage / Shop N Save housebrand. And yes, the government is encouraging us to all go and buy housebrand to save money due to the poor economic outlook in Singapore. First of all, I find it pretty stupid, considering that the prices of some housebrands are more expensive. Furthermore, the quality of some of the products are in question. You should be aiming for value for money, instead of the cheapest. Having choices is important, so you should not always go for the housebrand. Look around, you might be surprised to find that some of the other brands have better value than the housebrands. Hey, housebrands also need to make money what!
Anyway, I will be reviewing the No Frills Tuna in Oil so don’t fall asleep. I am currently in love with tuna. I tried it because it is supposedto be full of Omega-3 fatty acids which is actually brain food. Old people like me need more brain food because we are old and my brains aren’t as it is used to be. Now, I am really loving tuna. I am pretty sure that if I get tuna from outside which doesn’t come in a can, the taste of the tuna would be better. But for now, canned tuna will have to do. I am just too lazy to do any cooking either. Just imagine the hassle of cutting the tuna, washing it, then mixing with herbs and spices and cooking it. Probably takes a few hours, considering that I am a lousy cook.

Woohooo! Something to smile about! This 185g of canned tuna is soaked in oil, as shown in the above picture. You can see the words “Tuna in Oil” as well as to the right “in oil”. I believe that they don’t want their customers to miss out that this tuna is soaked in tuna.

Okay, there is the nutrition information. A little more fattening than other brands of canned tuna (except of course those mayo tuna) which is surprising. I had thought that most manufacturers would be smart enough nowadays to realize that a lot of health conscious consumers are looking at tuna as an healthy alternative to meat. Even Ayam Brand now comes with a”light” version of their canned tuna.

The ingredients of this canned tuna includes tuna, soybean oil, water and salt. Oh, “this product contains fish and soybean product”. And why is there water in the canned tuna?

Ahh…product of Thailand. Again, it seems that most canned tuna we find in Singapore is manufactured in Thailand.
Oh, by the way, it seems that in their quest to be the cheapest canned tuna, this No Frills canned tuna doesn’t come with their pull up tabs. So you need a can opener in order for you to open the can. Smart, now I have to spend so much effort to open this can just to get to 185g of tuna meat. Thanks a lot!
