Sharing is caring. I guess if the world cares, we won’t be seeing so many problems in the world. At least that is what I believe. And I believe that as someone who drinks Kefir, it is important for me to inform others about the benefits of drinking Kefir. I hope that others will also enjoy the benefits as well. The health cost in Singapore has been raising like nobody’s business and getting sick is going to be a burden to you and your family. Furthermore, who wants to get sick. We all would like to live a long and healthy life. In Singapore, we live in overcrowded conditions. All you need to do is to take the public transport and you will be immediately bombarded with people sneezing, coughing and spitting. Of course it would be better for them to learn some hygiene but we all know that it won’t happen. So the next best thing is to get some defense against these germs and bacteria. What better way than a healthy colon. And what better to a healthier colon than drinking a daily cup of Milk Kefir to supplement your regular food intake? I have only been drinking Kefir grains for about 2 months and I feel healthier. Sure, most of us will have some minor problems drinking milk Kefir in the beginning but I start by drinking about half a cup and slowly advance to 1 cup. And now, I have no problems drinking Kefir. Your body may need some time to adjust to the Kefir, so don’t not worry if your stomach feels uncomfortable after you have taken your first cup of Kefir.

I myself had a hard time finding Kefir grains in Singapore. It seems that there is nobody in Singapore willing to share or even sell their Kefir grains.I had to purchase the Kefir grains from somebody in Germany. And I think it is a crime that so few in Singapore realize what milk Kefir can do for them. I know, Singaporeans are bombarded with so many different kinds of vitamin supplements, commerical health drinks, pro-biotic capsules and so on, that we naturally believe that everything good must come in a pill or in a bottle. When I told my friend about this milk Kefir, she looked at me like I am some sort of new-age weirdo. Worst of all, they are not used to the taste. Even when I give them a taste of my home made yogurt (plain), most of them find the taste objectable (too sour). Kefir taste sour as well. Furthermore, it looks a lot like milk which have been left on the table for too long, with small curds floating about everywhere. It does not like attractive. I however find the taste very freshing. Sure, it doesn’t taste as good as those sweet drinking yogurt you find in the stores, Istill enjoy drinking it. Remember, it is a pro-biotic drink, packed with all sorts of good bacteria and yeast! No other fermented dairy product comes even close to what Kefir can offer, not even yogurt. So why not, go ahead and get yourself some Kefir grains and live a healthy life?

Anyway, the main point of this blog post is to tell you that I might have some excess Kefir grains to share. So if you live in Singapore and would like to try milk Kefir and be happy, send an email to me at

admin (AT) efwsg.org

and I will send whenever I have any excess grains. Please understand that the grains need to take time to grow, so I might not have any grains at that moment but I will sure try to send them by mail if I have. No, no monetary reward is necessary. However, you must promise to take care of the grains and share them with your friends if you have any excess. If you like, you can get me a pack of milk because my Kefir grains need milk. lol! And spread the word of Kefir to the masses! Let them know that you don’t need to buy those pills to stay healthy. A cup of Kefir a day, keeps the doctor away!

Oh, if you live in Malaysia and you are interested in making your very own Kefir drink, kindly contact JOYFUL at

kefirbaby (AT) yahoo.com

She has both the Milk Kefir Grains and the Water Kefir Grains. EnJOY!

I was reading your other posts just now. Very good posts! It will be very helpful to many ppl. Thanks again!

  6. Cindy February 5, 2009, 7:41 pm

hi there! i have disappeared from your blog for a while… but i m still making my kefir almost everyday :)

so i m happy to return to see you share your grains. i have some spare grains now too. so if you have anyone who needs them, you can refer them to me. and yes, i still trade my grains for a bottle of FRESH milk, preferably Magnolia low fat FRESH milk or Meiji. hehe

well, I am still experimenting with the different types of milk… and i have had some really bad experience with UHT. I guess i may have bought the wrong type of UHT coz I got the one that was produced from milk solids. should have just got the ones that are high temp treated straight from fresh milk. arghhh… so this UHT one i got sucks… taste horrible. so bad that i poured the milk kefir after 1 mouthful. :P i even had to “rinse” my kefir grains with meiji milk thereafter. haha

  7. admin February 6, 2009, 2:42 am

    We miss you. :-(

What brand of UHT milk was there. Luckily all the UHT milk I used is made from fresh milk. Isn’t milk solids sort of like powdered milk? I am looking at Pura UHT Milk. There are some very good recommendations from the Internet about this brand. I think I will try it.

You can also try the Pura fresh milk (homogenized) too. Heard that it is more or less comparable to Meiji.

It is just too bad that the prices of these fresh milk is so much more than UHT milk. More than double sometimes. :-(

  8. CIndy February 7, 2009, 9:54 am

ah! so glad to know that my presence matters! :)

i think the UHT milk i used is Magnolia… u know, the one with the cute cow on the packaging. i bought it mainly becoz the cow looks so cute. haha! wrong move… coz i only realised it is from milk solids rather than highly treated fresh milk. gave it a try nevertheless but it is really terrible… so now i only use that milk for cooking.

i realise that there aren’t any UHT LOW FAT milk that is made from fresh milk… or are there? let me know if you know of any good ones.

So far, with all your experiences, which UHT milk is the most yummy for you? Would like to hear your advice b4 i head down to NTUC to get another pack of UHT again. :)

and yes… fresh milk is so expensive and has so short shelve life… but they are soooooo yummy.. hehe

  9. admin February 8, 2009, 9:47 am

I never used low-fat or non-fat milk for my Kefir before. I used only full cream milk. And these are usually fresh milk. And I used a few times Skim Milk. I wonder it should be something like non-fat milk in a different name right?

Hey you tried organic milk? I have used “True Organic” UHT organic milk. Tastes quite nice and is very creamy. Not sure whether this is what you need. However I think if you use organic milk, might as well use fresh milk as the price is about the same (or even more expensive).

I just purchased Meiji fresh milk. Will give a little update on the resulting Kefir. Just wondering whether you dump it cold into the Kefir grains or you let it warm to room temperature?

  10. Cindy February 8, 2009, 11:15 pm

ah… i have been using low fat milk all the while… low fat fresh milk, that is. no choice… i m watching my weight… :P

and no… i have not tried organic milk… coz like u say, the price is comparable to fresh milk… i m considering UHT as it is cheaper and has a longer shelve life. hehe

yes, please share ur experiences with meiji… i tried both the full cream and low fat for meiji… of coz, nothing beats full cream milk… but the low fat one is not too bad too. :)

nope… i m quite lazy… so i never warm the milk. i always just pour it to my grains… anyway, i always pour in the milk and put it straight into fridge to store until next day before i take it out… so no difference for me… should be ok i guess, since my grains are populating like crazy.

  11. JULIANA February 10, 2009, 10:31 am

I started making kefir after ADMIN shared the grains with me (really grateful!)
I also have bad experience making kefir with Magnolia UHT milk. I have only used UHT milk before. Here are the differences I find when making kefir with different brand, would like to share here:
Marigold UHT -> more sour, creamy, like fresh yogurt (I like it)
Magnolia UHT -> very sour, super creamy, alcoholic (a bit weird, cheesy smell)
Harvest Fresh -> similar to Marigold UHT but less sour

Going to try true organic milk or whole milk later. I noticed that the “separation” occurred faster than when i first got the grains. So I added more milk (marigold UHT again) yesterday and the result was too diluted but also taste OK to me. I like it creamier.

  12. Serene February 21, 2009, 6:37 am

Hey! I am very interested in making kefir. But how do i start?

  13. Serene February 21, 2009, 6:45 am

    Hello,
I am sorry, but i tried to send you an email via the address you have mentioned above, but i can’t
Maybe, you can send me an email instead, sorry for bothering you!
    my email is enmingying@gmail.com

  14. Catherine March 1, 2009, 7:55 am

I sent you an email but I also wanted to post here too, just to make sure.

I’m not in Singapore, but I’m nearby – Bangkok. Thailand isn’t exactly known for its health food stores so I’m not sure I’d be able to find kefir grains.

Since I’m in Bangkok, I’d send money via paypal to cover costs instead of milk.

    (here’s hoping I can get some soon… :-)

  15. dee March 6, 2009, 1:01 am

    hihi,

i’ve been using fresh milk at home to make kefir and the cheapest fresh milk so far is none other than our own local produced – VISHNU! :)
u can get it from NTUC supermarket.. not all NTUC has it.. the ones that i know would have are queenstown, yewtee, toa payoh and clementi.. haven’t tried checking other parts of SG tho.. :)
something that i realized is that the grains will grow very fast when it’s fermented longer.. till u see distinct separation.. of course, this is by accident coz i was too busy to strain them! :p
w/ this hot tropical weather, i noticed that my milk will separate even before the 12hr mark! so, what i’ve been doing is, put them in the fridge and let it out either in the morning and strain at night or the other way around.. the texture is just nice.. creamy, fizzy and tangy.. somehow, this is what my HB and DS likes it.. lolx..
oh yeah, i’ve alr tried making kefir cheese.. not bad.. it’s not as sour if kept in fridge for a few weeks.. we spread it on bread easily too.. i’ve made pancake w/ kefir too.. as milk substitute.. i let it stand overnite and next day, it makes the pancake a bit fluffy too.. :)
    has anyone tried fermenting vegetables?

  16. admin March 6, 2009, 7:44 am

Yup, saw it at NTUC Tampines. However, it doesn’t seem very popular. But the price as a fresh milk is quite cheap compared to others. In fact, cheaper than some UHT milk. I have not tried it but I am keen to have a taste of the Kefir made by Vishnu milk.

Yes, you are right. If I have a choice, I would normally ferment last than 12hours. Mots of the time however, I have not choice because of work commitments. But if you place the Kefir and the grains in the fridge, it might not be good for the Kefir grains. I believe that it is not the optimal temperature for the grains.

  17. dee March 6, 2009, 10:40 am

oh, apparently it is ok.. actually i’m in the kefir-making yahoo group and asked them.. many do so.. :)

gosh, my current batch is way to thick to drink (again!).. i’ll have to make another batch of soft cheese..

btw admin, if anyone needs some grains in the west and not mind coming over to my place to get them, let me knw.. :)

i’m gonna give some to my SIL and to my friend soon coz the grains are growinig too fast.. causing my 1L of milk to ferment way too quick and i’m not very comfortable “freezing” or “storing” them as yet..

  18. admin March 6, 2009, 6:44 pm

Thanks for the offer Dee. Will do.

For the excess grains, have you tried eating them? Taste a bit like sponge. lol. But from what I read, it is supposed to be good for you aka additional health benefits.

  19. dee March 7, 2009, 12:01 am

yeah, i tried eating them.. very spongy.. haha.. some actually put them in the grinder and eat them after..

  20. admin March 7, 2009, 10:23 pm

I find it a bit weird to be eating the grains. Feels like eating some tough little sponge pieces. Eeeek!

I am thinking of trying out water kefir. Heard that it is delicious and less tart than milk kefir. And it is more convenient to keep than milk kefir as well. I always have storage problem in my house, so if I can keep them in plastic PET bottles (like those coke bottles), it would be great and convenient.

  21. dee March 8, 2009, 3:20 am

    question..
can we store kefir milk in the plastic bottles?
    would there be any reaction?

  22. admin March 9, 2009, 6:51 pm

I believe that food grade PET bottles should be safe since they do store yogurt and vinegar in plastic bottles, Hopefully. I read that some people are worried about using plastic, but if they are worried about chemicals leeching into their kefir, they should be more worried about their office’s water dispenser. Most of them come in those huge plastic bottles.

  23. Fifi Wang March 18, 2009, 6:51 pm

  30. Vidyavati Sharma April 23, 2009, 8:32 am

Alas i were in Singapore. As a matter of fact i live in Jaipur, the Pink City of India. I highly appreciate ur spirit of sharing. If there were more people like you on this earth many have-nots will have they needed. I’m new to kefir making. i have read a lot about the benefits of kefir on net and am very keen to start first batch of kefir as soon as i’m able to get some grains to begin. i’m desperately looking for some – but, haven’t succeeded so far. By grace of God, i’m sure, some day i’ll succeed. I have already decided to pass on my spare grains to others as and when i have surplus grains with me.
Any way thanks a lot for ur blog.

  31. Vidyavati Sharma April 23, 2009, 8:49 am

    Hi Admin,
I think better i had mentioned my email address in the body of the message i sent u a few minutes ago. This may enable other participants of the blog who are from India and have surplus grains to contact me directly for sparing some for me.
    My email address is: sharma1948@dataone.in
    Thanks again.

  32. Carol April 30, 2009, 6:38 am

    Hi Admin,

Pls do not store ur kefir in the plastic PET containers/bottles. They are meant to be stored in glass bottles so it will be good if u buy glass bottles for them. Sharing them with others is a form of love for the kefir, storing them properly is anyway of respecting them.

Kefir contain life, as there are millions, billions, or even zillions of living organisms living in them so I treat them just like any other “living thing”. I had been consuming kefir (milk) since 5 yrs ago, but becos I couldn’t keep up with the chore of taking care of those kefir and drinking them on a daily basis (if I don’t drink I will still have to constantly change the milk and soak them in clean milk so that they will not be contaminated and spoil), I eventually have to throw them away cos no one else I know knows about kefir. Those friends of mine thought that I was crazy to drink such yucky stuff (even I’m the living testimony to it) and I had no one to give them to. Left with no choice, I had to discard them with a heavy heart.

I’m so glad that I’ve finally found someone (YOU!) in SG who know the goodness and is sharing it with the masses out there… God bless u!

  33. admin May 1, 2009, 7:33 am

    Why thank you!
I really hope that those who have received the grains have received the benefits of consuming kefir and are living healthier lives. Too bad, nowadays we are stuck with processed foods which are pretty unhealthy.

  34. VIDYAVATI SHARMA May 2, 2009, 2:53 am

    Hi Carol,
I highly appreciate yours as well as Admin’s views about sharing the benefits of the great probiotic drink KEFIR. I’m in India and here hardly someone knows about it. I have read a little about the kefir on net and want to start brewing my own kefir and drink it on regular basis. But, I’m not able to find anyone here locally to share the grains from him/her. Once I procure the grains, I plan to share my surplus stock with others so that more and more people are benefitted by this health drink. I’m desperately looking for some grains to start my first batch. I wonder whether u can dehydrate some of ur surplus grains(dried grains expected to weigh less than 5 grams) and send to me in an ordinary airmail letter. This will advance your sacred KEFIR CAUSE beyond the frontiers of Singapore. If you are willing to take some pains and bear an ordinary postal letter charges for the great cause, i may be contacted through my email address: sharma1948@dataone.in
    Thanking you in advance.

  35. Andy Lim May 2, 2009, 9:09 am

I accidentally came across your interesting blog regarding the benefit of drinking kefir. I am having gastic problem for some time. I am now taking some probiotic medication in pill form for my medical condition. I am interested to try kefir milk hopefully it will help with my problem. Do you have spare kefir grain you could give me , I would be greatlly appreciated. . I am unable to email to you with the above email address. I may be contacted through my email address
    losogroup@yahoo.com Thanking you in advance

  36. Lim JL May 7, 2009, 12:16 am

Any chance the kefir have been shared to someone in Kuala Lumpur/Klang Valley (Malaysia)? Hope to get some grain, as I’m keen to try too.

  37. Jessica May 9, 2009, 9:57 am

    Hi Admin,

I was at this this website before a year and a ago and was browsing around for free kefier but was unable to get any. Any chance that i might get some grain from you for my own consumption as i have heard of its many benefits.

Greatly appreciate yr reply and yr generosity.

  38. admin May 12, 2009, 6:50 pm

Sure, just email me at admin (AT) efwsg.org with your mailing address and I will try to procure some grains for ya!

  39. Vidyavati Sharma May 13, 2009, 1:01 am

    Hi Admin, Hi Carol,
My postings on this site of 23rd April and 2nd May respectively remain unresponded so far. I’m looking for some kefir grains since a long time to brew my first batch. i’ve been visiting the site and opening my Mail Inbox every day in the hope of a positive response. But, sorry, found no reply yet. My email address is: sharma1948@dataone.in

  40. Jolynn May 22, 2009, 10:24 am

    Hi admin

Thanks for all the information and the website here on fermented food. I just am into making my own yogurt lately and honestly people around me has generally looked at me weirdly. (like wat is this girl thinking of going to so much trouble? can just buy from supermarket lah) But I try to cut down on processed food for health reasons and I feel better making it myself because you pretty much knows that the cultures are definitely active and such.

Am very interested in acquiring kefir as well and had just dropped an email to you today. If you ahve received it yet could you please let me know at jolynn1102@yahoo.com.

  41. admin May 28, 2009, 10:03 am

Yes, I get that a lot from my friends as well. Apparently no one seems to understand that homemade yogurt is much healthier to store bought ones. Sad. I am quite sure that the health of Singaporeans would improve if they reduce the consumption of sugar in their daily diet.

  42. 凡夫俗子 May 29, 2009, 11:24 pm

it appears to me there r some msian looking for kefir grains to kick start their diy milk kefir …
i dont mind to share so long if they live in the klang valley …
u may ask them to email me … thanks …

  43. admin May 30, 2009, 5:54 am

Thanks for the offer, 凡夫俗子. However, I have sent the grains to him and he received it. I will send them your way if there is anyone requesting the grains living in Klang Valley. Thank you again for your kind offer

  44. Natalie June 10, 2009, 9:39 am

Hi!!! I received the keir grains you sent me a week ago. Thankyou so much. I’ve been experimenting with various types of milk because fresh milk is kinda expensive. I dont normally drink fresh milk but powdered milk due to the higher cost. Anyway here’s what I found out
meiji fresh milk- good grain growth. tastes great. slighly watery. Not as thick. A layer of yellow liquid forms at the surface and you have to stir.
powdered milk- didnt work out. It smelled bad and it wasnt thick. the kefir grains disappeared.
home made soya bean milk- also didnt work. I got similiar results when using powdered milk. smelled bad
dutch lady UHT full cream milk- the kefir was thicker and creamier than using fresh milk. But the kefir grains did not grow. In fact it become smaller. Im concerned. Why is that so? I dont have much kefir left due to experimenting and only fresh milk produces the greatest amount of growth.

  45. pauline June 12, 2009, 9:52 pm

I have read about kefir from a detox book but it has little info. Glad to chance a upon ur blog. Really warm my heart to know that so many are willing to share. I would really like to try kefir as I have been suffering from irregular bowel move. I am staying in the north and wonder if any of you are nearby?

  46. Justina June 15, 2009, 2:39 am

Anyone has Kombucha and water grains in Singapore to share?

Would appreciate alot that you can contact me at my email address at surfbuyer@yahoo.com

    Thank you very much!

  47. admin June 15, 2009, 7:26 pm

I only have milk Kefir and CSY. It would be cool if someone shared Kombucha and water sugar kefir as well.

  48. admin June 15, 2009, 7:27 pm

    Pauline,

Please send me your mailing address to this email – admin@efwsg.org . I should have some spare grains to share.

  49. 凡夫素子 June 16, 2009, 1:23 am

    natalie
from my experience in diy milk kefir … i prefer to use raw fresh milk … cos it contains all the natural enzymes and nutrients … once the milk is pasturised … all the enzymes are denatured / deactivated … ie … they can no more carry their function as catalyst ….
the next best alternative is pasturised fresh milk … the worst is the uht milk .. cos the milk is subject to Ultra High Temperature … so it is sometimes classified as “dead” milk …
u will find kefir grains fed with raw fresh milk are very robust … they grow like nobody business …

  50. 凡夫俗子 June 16, 2009, 4:54 am

    mr admin …
u can actually train ur milk kefir to become water sugar kefir …
wat u need to do is to rinse the milk kefir with water to remove all the curd n milk solid …
then u place them in a sugary water … n let them sit for 24 hours …
drain off the water … n repeat the process 2 – 3 times until u don smell any milk left over in the newly-trained water sugar kefir …
n the new grains are ready to kefir fruit juices of your choice n young coconut water too …
    ciao …

  51. Justina June 17, 2009, 12:36 am

I just got hold of some kefir grains to start out. So far, the fermentation is rather fast with our recent hot weather. Am using magnolia full cream fresh milk.

For those who cannot take the plain and sour taste of kefir, can make a cup of 100% natural honey and pour in 1/3 cup of kefir, use a plastic/wooden spoon and stir well. It tastes just like the lassi/yoghurt drink. Add more kefir to thicken the drink to your preference.

For those who loves fruits, can also add in some berries to flavour the drink.

  52. 凡夫俗子 June 17, 2009, 4:49 am

wanna a glass of yummy delicious kefir milk shake ???
just add in a table spoon of fruit jam of ur choice … strawberries, blueberries etc …. n run thru the blender … here u are … a glass of strawberry kefir milk shake …
really helpful if u run out of time in the morning rush ….
choose a fruit jam that is free of preservative, coloring and added sugar …

  53. admin June 27, 2009, 9:21 am

    @ 凡夫俗子

Ya, I have been thinking of using milk kefir grains to make sugar kefir. But I guess there should be at least some difference in the bacteria and the composition of the milk kefir grains and the water sugar kefir grains. So…

  54. 凡夫俗子 June 28, 2009, 10:13 pm

hmm … u are quite right that milk kefir grains may be different from sugary kefir grains … but according to Dom … we can train milk kefir grains to kefirize juices … by adpating them to the new culture medium … ie sucrose / fructose … instead of lactose (milk sugar) …

that is why we cannot transfer milk kefir grains directly to kefirise juices … we must train them … by rinsing the milk kefir grains … n keep them in a sugary solution for 24 hours … n repeat the process until the newly trained kefirs contain no more milk smell …

only then can we use these trained grains to kefirise jiuces … n we have to keep them as separate batch … cant use them to do milk kefir again …

i have used this method to kefirise juices … very much to my satisfaction …

may be u can try a small batch … and see for urself ???

  55. admin August 11, 2009, 9:06 am

I am currently attempting to make honey water kefir (or honey wine kefir or something like that) using the milk Kefir. Will update you guys to see whether it is successful or not.

However, from what I read, using milk Kefir to ferment in other mediums will damage it to the point where it cannot grow anymore. So beware.

Hi, its wonderful that you have propagated this culture of sharing. Perhaps to prevent abuse of your kindness, you may want to start charging for the grains. I have just paid for grains that probably came from a recipient of your kindness.

I’m not uphappy to have paid for it but disgusted that someone has taken your kindness and generosity for granted and has sought to gain economic benefit instead.

  57. NIRA YUNIATI August 15, 2009, 4:00 am

I am happy to hear you that you can share your kefir grain. I am looking for kefir grain for sharing in Indonesia, but so far I could not get the grain yet. My collage will be in Singapore in 17 th September 2009. Fortunately he also need the same thing. Would you please to inform me your address or how can my collage contact you when he is in Singapore. Thank you for your kindness.

  58. admin August 15, 2009, 5:47 am

Please send me an email with your mailing address in Indonesia and I see what I can do.

  59. admin August 15, 2009, 5:51 am

    @CDL,

Thanks. In my opinion, there will always be people out there like that. What to do? But the important thing is that there are people out there who benefits from Kefir. I also bought mine from some dude in Germany. Let’s all stay positive and believe that there are more people out there sharing than there are people out there seeking just economic benefits.

Hi friend, I am very glad to receive the kefir grain today, will start to make an “experiment” asap. It is always exciting to try something new. Thanks so much……

  61. admin September 5, 2009, 6:45 am

You are welcome. I hope that the grains will bring you good health

  62. Charley September 16, 2009, 8:11 am

I had tried to make it using 3 difference type of fresh milk since I received grain kefir 3 weeks ago.
    > Pura UHT : a bit sour, not so sticky, still milk taste
    > Meiji Low Fat: a bit sour, slightly sticky, a bit alcohol taste
    > Meiji (I drink it daily since 10 years ago): no alcohol taste, sticky, sour (I love the taste)
When I was at CStorage HVillage this evening, I surprised to find out that a 1 Litre of Milk Kefir (Nancy Kefir brand) priced SGD 14.95 …..woowww…..6 time higher compare to SGD 4.95 of 2 Litres Meiji Fresh Milk

  63. Miss Vinny September 19, 2009, 7:52 am

Btw, I’m making my own kefir and it’s the 2nd day. I noticed that the kefir grains are all “powdery” and some have broken up. Is this normal? And then it tastes and smells rather funny, like “rancid milk”. :P

Charley: Serious?! That is really very expensive. :o Besides, are the bacteria cultures still alive after transporting all the way to Singapore from US?

  64. Charley September 23, 2009, 7:19 am

I went to Cold Storage Holland Village for buying fresh milk this evening……and decided to buy 1 pack of Nancy’s kefir.
Vinny: yes, the price is correct $14.95/pack.
The Nancy;s kefir taste is a slightly more sour, but overall taste and viscosity are same with my own made.
Yup….I am very very happy, will continue to make kefir …….

  65. admin September 23, 2009, 7:36 pm

And for the price of just the milk!

  76. Vidyavbati Sharma November 13, 2009, 9:13 am

In the last post my email address did not appear as a link, perhaps, due to a missing space after “address:”. I’m, therefore, re-writing my email address which is like this: sharma48@dataone.in
I may also mention my alternative email address for the benefit of those who wish to contact me. Thanks.
    Sharma

  77. Caroline November 20, 2009, 3:39 am

I have surplus Water Kefir Grains and am willing to share with those who need them. I can mail dried WKG to anyone anywhere for the cost of shipping and handling. On 13th November I posted the same message, but inadvertently I made a mistake in writing my email address which I regret. I have to, therefore, repeat the message today. My correct email addresses are: sharma1948@dataone.in and tovsharma@yahoo.com. Anyone interested may contact me – I’ll be too glad to mail the grains.

  79. TUNAS November 23, 2009, 11:27 pm

    Hi Admin
I live in Singapore and have just started drinking kefir about 3 weeks ago.
I got the grains from a friend who lives in Bali.
Initially I left the keffir in a rather dark place with room temperature, it became thick rather fast (like thick yogurt) in just one day. I drank it daily and It gave me constipation.
Now I leave them inside the fridge, still drink it daily when the consistency is just a tiny bit thicker than regular milk (my constipation stopped)
The problem now, the grains don’t seem to grow.
    Any tips?

  80. joyful November 29, 2009, 12:46 pm

    Hi Tunas,

When you started on a potent food like kefir, your body system will take time to adjust to get rid of toxic or any unwanted stuff. if the detox action moves faster than what your body can cope, you will have symptoms like constipation or something else.

Kefir grains hate the cold ie your fridge. When you store them in the fridge, they will go to sleep. That’s why the consistency is different as compared to when they were at room temperature. That’s why your detox effect stops, and constipation stops because the kefir made inside the fridge is less potent less effective less probiotic benefits. The yeast/bacteria’s ideal ratio is off balance and that is no good.

What you should perhaps do is to bring them back to room temperature. Drink the kefir in lesser amount, then step up gradually until your constipation stops. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Add ground flaxseed or psyllium husk to your kefir. You may blend your kefir with banana or papaya to make nice smoothies. Step up on your fruits and vegetables intake daily. All these measures should help to get rid of constipation.

When you bring the kefir grains back to your counter top, you will then come back here to ask us how to slow down the grains growth later, haha.

  81. Ms. Tunas November 29, 2009, 11:13 pm

    @ Joyful,

    Thanks for the tips.
I have taken out my kefir from the fridge, it is now back on my kitchen top.
I will drink lesser amount of kefir this time and see how it goes.

  82. Marx December 4, 2009, 3:24 pm

Hey Admin. Thanks once again fro sharing the Kefir grains with me too! They r growing up well !

Anyway i started drinking but like wat is said in my trusty website, i might have leaky gut aka celiac disease and end up breaking out with my eczema bad.. http://www.askshelley.com/forum/about609.html

But will kep the little guys growing till when im ready to take em again!

  83. admin December 8, 2009, 4:26 am

Yes, that is the basic. Of course, temperature is important as well. The optimal temp is 22 degrees Celsius as recommended by Dom. Make sure everything in contact with the milk and the grains are clean.

  84. Harish Krishnan December 13, 2009, 8:37 pm

    Hi,

I had been taking kefir in the past but discontinued the habit due to the difficulty in procuring the grains locally.
It is gratifying to know that you have taken the pain & the effort to share these wonder grains with others and thereby help spread their benefits.
Please advise how I can arrange to get some kefir grains from you.

    Thanks
    Harish

  88. glenda January 19, 2010, 9:25 pm

hi there! i am a kefir grower myself and im planning on sharing my kefir to my relatives back in our province. can you teach me how to prepare my kefir grains for transport? would appreciate it very much if you could share me info/tips.

    thanks so much!

  89. admin January 20, 2010, 10:34 am

    @Glenda
I assume that you are planning to send the grains to someone via snail mail locally? Well, for it, I simple put it in a ziplock bag and post it. It should be already for 2-3 days. For those lasting more than 4 days, you should wash the grains first before sending them. Just make sure you use unchlorinated water.
