Hmmm…I am not sure why it suddenly came to me but it did. I am now considering making my own cheese. It seems that recently I am having all these weird ideas about making stuff. First it was about making bread-like stuff like Pizza, then it was making beer and even later it was wine making. Now it seems that I am going forward and making cheese. Yes, I do like cheese. Too bad that in Singapore, not everyone likes cheese. It is a very healthy snack and it will give you strong bones and teeth so I would encourage all Singaporeans to go eat cheese. Even the rat like cheese, why not humans eh?
Anyway, from my limited understanding of cheese making, it seems that it is quite a complicated process. Apparently it needs Buttermilk (or yogurt) and something called rennet. Buttermilk can be easily found in our local supermarket if I am not wrong. I never did really go and search for such things as buttermilk but from what I read on forums, it should be easily found. Rennet on the other hand seems to be difficult to find in Singapore. Yes, it proves that Singaporeans don’t like cheese at all. You may need to purchase Rennet from the Internet and get it delivered here. They come in tablet or liquid form.
The process of making cheese is as follows:
- Add starter to the milk. Starter may be yogurt or buttermilk.
- Let it rest overnight at room temperature.
- Add the rennet tablet. (Rennet is used to “harden” the cheese)
- Cut the curds that has formed into manageable pieces
- Warm the curds
- Seperate the curds and the whey (liquid)
- Add salt to the curds and mix
- Press the cheese
So there you have it. Cheese! Of course, you will need to age the cheese for it to taste better. Hmm….it seems that making cheese is a whole lot like making beer. Cool isn’t it? If this has gotten your attention on making cheese or if you have some experience with cheese making yourself, please give me a hoot as I am also very interested.
