For the term Octopus Dogs. Yes, I know, it’s weird that they are attempting to get ranked for this term but hey, it’s somewhat interesting. I think they are also trying to rank well for some other weird terms too. Look at the Google Search here. You can see that Webwobot is ranking at number 2. Let’s try to beat the big and power photo site Flickr. That would be a good accomplishment. I am thinking that this term isn’t that competitive, but since Flickr is at number 1, it could be a little difficult to kick it off that spot. Perhaps a number of backlinks will be powerful enough to push Webwobot to number 1? Of course, Webwobot itself is no slouch too. Let’s see how this goes. And I wonder who will be searching for term “Octopus Dogs” on Google anyway? Perhaps Scolls can tell us.

Nope, they didn’t pay me to review their services. Neither did they threatened to cut me off if I don’t write a good review. Actually they should. This is a fair and unbiased review and it’s all my opinion. Don’t beat me up if you disagree, okay? I am just their paying customer. Our webhost is HostPC. I have been using this Webhost for about 3 to 4 months now and it’s been quite good. The only serious downtime was for about 2 hours or so. However, I did face some intermittent FTP access problem once in a while.

Speed wise, you tell me. I find the speeds quite reasonable myself (this is all the way from Singapore), although it is not like blazing fast, but I don’t think there is a need for that anyway. And nobody using the site complained about the speed. Performance wise I have no problems too. I am using 2 databases, one for my directory and one for this blog. Again, I had acceptable speeds and no lag, which I expect since both these sites have very little traffic.

Now we go to the support. I have to say, their support isn’t the greatest. In fact, I have send questions to their support staff which wasn’t even answered. I mean, at least do a simple reply for their customers. Email support seemed not to be their main priority. So you are forced to use their ticketing system, which is a bit cumbersome. But they do reply if you use this ticketing system at least. Weird that they leave emails to support addresses unanswered. This is not that good.

Overall, I think this is quite a good host. And it’s reasonably priced (aka cheap) as well. Their control panel is DirectAdmin, not Cpanel. This is probably where they saved some money and pass it on to their customers. Although DirectAdmin is not as feature rich as Cpanel, it’s still pretty powerful and user-friendly. I would highly recommend this host if you are looking for a budget plan.

Don’t be surprised, but I added one more listing to the Authority Sites Directory. Yes, one. That makes it a grand total of 377 listings there. When will I complete 400 listings? I really don’t know. Looks like it is still a long way off. Anyway, the weekend is here, so I guess I will have some spare time to update my directory. I have been promising myself to update my directory for weeks now, but there isn’t much motivation at all. Google seem to hate my directory, dragging most of them into supplemental hell. And nobody seem to bother visiting my directory too. Wait a minute….could it be that because Google sent my pages into supplemental, that’s why nobody visits my directory? Chicken or the egg? Both please and if you have, I will add ham into the mix.

I wonder how many of you started a project or a business, full of high hopes and aspirations, but gave it up after a few months? I have seen a lot of directories start with a lot of promise, the owner does a lot of promotion, new articles and features appear, only to shut down very soon after. I guess this is part of the business world, and a directory isn’t much different from a normal business. Except if you have a free directory.

So could it be motivation? Could it be profits? Or results? Or could it be that I am just plain lazy and stupid? Who really knows. But what I know is that I need to add more listings.

For my business directory site’s Chateau de Chillon articles! Remember just a few days ago I was gloating about my business directory article is ranking very well in Google (page 2 in fact)? Google must have heard me and now they dropped my article to page 5! They don’t like gloating little boys I believe. Check it out here. Geee…thanks Google. That’s very thoughtful of you.

Why did they do it? I don’t know. I didn’t do any changes to the page nor did I do any blackhat thingy. There are some decent links to it too. The content is unique and well written by Scolls of WebWobot. I didn’t find any duplicate text or content either. In fact, all I did was to blog about my achievement. Sure I added some links, but these links are related and are not paid links. Anyway, it looks like at the time of writing, Google still had not index that blog post yet, so I am still confused as ever. Maybe it is a temporary thing? I hope so, I need my ranking back to get tons of traffic to my site.

Anyway, it goes up and down and now, it has stayed all the way down into their supplemental index. From page 5 to Supplemental in just a space of a few weeks. Pretty good achievement I guess. I think perhaps I do not have enough text in those articles and maybe too many links? However, most of the links are internal. Just wondering whether too many internal links will affect my page’s rankings.

How about this, I will stop making fun of Google if they don’t hurt me in rankings? Please, pretty please? Truce?

Why? Well because now you can. Instead of spending all your time fighting with each other and saying that each other’s Operating System sucks, you guys can now work together hand in hand. With the site MacWindows! Such an innovative name by the way. This site teaches you to properly do Mac and Windows integration. Not only does it teach you kids how to play nice with each other instead of calling each other names, it also allows you to do networking between the two Operating Systems. Now you guys can call each other names through the network or shared folders. Or you can print out well formatted insulting messages on each other’s printer. Furthermore, you can read up on their numerous articles on like setting up a Mac on a Windows network or vice versa, installing Windows on an Intel Mac, using a Windows Client on a MacOSX server and so on. I found this site pretty useful, especially if you have just 1 or 2 Macs on a Windows network and want to setup file or printer sharing. They also collect useful information and tips submitted by their readers into an easy to read Q&A format.

Now let’s think of word combinations for the new name of this site. Macdows? Winintosh? Swocam? The Blue and Grey Screens? If you can think of nice combinations, please leave a comment here so that I can send them to the owners of MacWindows.

Just two days ago, this blog was infested by spammers. I had like 10 spam comments coming in on that day. That’s a lot considering that this blog is somewhere lost in the Sahara Desert. It is surprising that even spammers don’t know that all URLs have the “nofollow” tag, so they probably won’t receive any SEO benefit from it. I moderate all comments, thus I have to approve or reject every comment that comes into this blog. And I really hate delete spam comments, so now I installed Akismet into my wordpress blog to combat this problem. This plugin is supposed to be an intelligent software which can be taught to know which type of comment is spam and which is not. So I guess what this means is that the longer you use Akismet, the better it gets in preventing spam. Sort of like me. I am now seeing whether there will be any improvement or not. But since yesterday, I did not receive any spam comment as yet, which is a good sign.

If only they have such things for directories, I won’t be spending all my time deleting spam sites from my directories. What say some of you brilliant coders out there? Do something to help us, we are dying here guys

Finally, this good looking directory script has came out of beta and is now Version 1. Both the free version and the paid version is out and anyone can download the free script from their website. I must admit I am pretty impressed with this powerful script. It has some interesting features anb abilities not found in other directory scripts  like a built-in ticket support system, location manager (like place/country/city), integrated user statistics page, multi-field search and a spellcheck for braindead people like me. Wow, truly amazing.  Please note that some of these features are for the paid version only, but the free version looks powerful enough for me. Although I have to say PhpLinkDirectory has some unique features which PhpLynx doesn’t have, like the very useful Article Editor and the quick category adder for lazy scums like me. Just too bad, PhpLynx script is closed source which means adding mods and other features will be difficult. However, you can customize it’s template so you can create your very own beautiful directory to boast to your friends.

I think that this Phplynx Directory Script should be able to compete with PhpLinkDirectory and take over a good market share from it. Unless PhpLinkDirectory really does something drastic and innovative, this will certainly be a strong challenger to PhpLinkDirectory. What is life without challenges right? Try it’s demo and be impressed like me. The paid version is US$85 or if you want an unbrandand version, it’s US$120 and ”free” support comes with it. Good Old Supplemental Pages

Following my previous blog post about my obsession with my websites (especially my directories) going into supplemental index, I have writen a little article on it. This follows a little research done by yours truly and hopefully it can be useful to you guys. However, please take note that this little study is not exhaustive and may have gaps or assumptions, so becareful while following these tips. I have used Alive Directory as a case study. And it seems that Aviva Directory suffers less from the supplemental index problem than Alive.  I wonder why is this so? From what I can see, Alive’s site navigation (and linkage) is slightly better from Aviva’s.

In the next few weeks, I hope to see less of my webpages in supplemental and more actually ranking for something on Google after I added more internal links between my directories’ detail pages. So every detail page is linked to 5 others in order to improve page visibility.  I have seen a lot of good pages with content not ranking very well, hope this will improve too. For god’s sake, O’ Scary and Feared One, release me from this hellhole!
