If any of you are interested, I have more information concerning the magnificant and powerful Chateau de Chillon (Castle of Chillon) which sits on the shores of Lake Geneva. It is probably one of the most famous castle in the whole of Europe. And it is remarkably preserved as well. This is just a little history.
- 12th century - Belonged to the Counts of Savoy who modified and enlarged it.
- 13th and 14th century - Used by the Counts of Savoy as summer residence. And also as a prison. They added more fortifications to the existing ones.
- 1536 - Captured by Bernese after they invaded from the North.
- 1798 - Owned by Canton of Vaud after their independence.
- 1816 - Chateau de Chillon was made famous by Lord Bryon who wrote the poem “The Prisoner of Chillon” about Francois de Bonivard who was a prisoner in the castle.
If you are looking for a modern day walkthough of the castle, you should look at the articles written by Scolls. It describes in detail the layout of the exterior and the interior of the castle.
